Getting Your Child To Pack Up Their Toys

toosh by toosh Talking Back(June 2007) (rank 57th)

This can be a very frustrating thing to do, and you may be tempted to give in and just do it yourself (as my hubby often is!), but try these ideas and hopefully they will make it easier for you!

Firstly start getting them to help as soon as

they can understand what you want them to do, and before they are old enough while you are packing up tell them what you are doing as you do it.

Make a game out of it - "see how fast you can put your blocks back in the box", race each other putting things away, see if they can fit everything back into the toy box so the lid closes, etc.

Turn their favourite music on and dance around with them while packing up - they will think this is great!

Explain why the toys have to be packed away and make them feel like a "big kid" for doing it.

These tips can also work with house work, my son loves to vacuum and dust. While I am cleaning the shower he wipes the cupboards and basin, while I'm vacuuming he takes over and when I'm folding nappies he tries so hard to help!

Just remember they may not do a fantastic job, praise them anyway - at least they have tried! Don't make any of this feel like a boring chore - make it all as much fun as you can - it will mae your life a whole lot easier!

My daughter has always seen me putting things away and from a very young age, can't remember when but i'm sure she was under 1, she has helped put things into boxes and put her books on the shelf. She was just always told to and still does it when I tell her to.  She needs a 5 minute warning, as do all kids, or she just won't do it.

Great tips!  Micro man does more chores than Maxi man around the house... However Maxi man does a better job of it.  We have a problem if we put away the toys too early in the day - Jay misses them too much and sits in the middle of the floor with his basket of toys sulking : )

Re: Getting Your Child To Pack Up Their Toys

From a very early age I've always gotten by kid's to pick up after themselves and tidy their rooms...I now don't have any problem with them doing it on their own......we also play music and see who can pick the most toys in their hands at once.....it can be a lot of fun....you just have make it fun and not seem like a chore or punishment......

Great article.......
