Holidaying in Oshawa,Ontario,Canada. What to do in my Hometown

Marglr by Marglr Minti Founder(June 2007) (rank 21st)
Hello All !!! Oshawa is a few miles from my husband and my birthplace,we have moved around a lot and ended back close! Oshawa is on Lake Ontario and we have summers of 30 plus and winters of minus 30. Summer activities of course include picknicking at the many parks and
conservation areas within short distance. They all basically have water and lovely trees and provide hiking, swimming and play areas. We have the Oshawa Generals which is a top notch junior A hockey team and a beautiful new arena that draws top entertainment acts. The Band Shell has music free during the summer and the Car Museum is close. A little north is Port Perry, featured as backdrop for several movies as it is quaint and very pretty. There are special little shops of all kinds and of course the casino,Blue Heron nearby. Slightly to the east is the Bowmanville Zoo and the area has many attractions such as Cat World, cats of all types up to lions! The lake is busy with vessels and you can travel across to the U.S.A.,a short hop! To the west is Toronto!!! A gem. Night life of all types, ballet, theater, comic clubs and all types of food. Toronto is alive with special events all year round. Carrabana is a hit with week long parties and parades as a summer event and sports teams are many. Along with football, lacross, soccer and cricket,we have the Raptors(basketball) and the Toronto Maple Leafs(haven't won the Stanly Cup in ages but we still love them!). There is the Science Center,Center Island( neat ferry ride!),the C.N. Tower...oh just so much to see and do. The Art Gallery of Ontario, the Weavers Guild, the Shoe Museum and my favourite the Royal Museum of Ontario that just opened the Crystal Addition! All this is serviced by the subway and there is TONS of shopping to be done. For a day trip you can reach Ottawa, beautiful gardens and parliment buildings,Kingston, very lovely city on Lake Ontario and one of the first towns in Canada,or Niagra Falls which is a must see! The falls are breathtaking no matter how often you go there. Then you have to see the Royal Botanical Gardens, the Butterfly Conservatory, and Marine Land. Just driving the Niagra Escarpment is totally beautiful. Or the Niagra gourge were you can ride the Maid of the Mist or Power Jet boats. So much to do!!! But if you love the great outdoors there is the Ontario North, not too far away where the lakes are so very beautiful and the camping great! This is just a bit, probably far too long and I know I've left out so much like all the winter joys of cross country skiing, downhill skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, geeee there is so much to do. Always something going on somewhere like parades, maple syrup demos, art and craft fests, special interest groups and clubs galore that but on events. Well if you want to know more or if I can answer any questions, feel free to ask! I'll do my best to answer.

Your neck of the woods sounds like a haven to me... I love the sound of it, and I am going to look up some of these places online so that I can imagine you better when I am hearing from you.

Canada is somewhere that I would definitely love to visit - especially to snowboard, and play up - lots of adventure sports like NZ, and the scenery looks amazing, not to mention the wildlife - and ya gotta love the accent!

Go Marg1

Hi Ya!!! I love Canada. I love the people and the great outdoors. I was never brought up with sports but there is tons along that line here in Ontario to do. The nature end of it all has always called me and outdoor adventures are so near. I wrote about the east coast that is dear to me and the west coast and I love the area around Lake Superior...basically I fall in love with any experience I have,...didn't know that about myself..but geee.. think it's true cause I love the northern States too! Beautiful and great places are all around. If I ever get the chance to travel I'd totally head your way!

You did a great job representing this great area!  It's amazing when you start thinking about it.  Hey, just realized you forgot the Toronto Zoo, with their new "living" dinosaur exhibit.  You could easily go on and on.

Re: Holidaying in Oshawa,Ontario,Canada. What to do in my Hometown
I love the Royal Ontario Museum - that in itself is beautiful and sound architecture.

One thing you forgot to mention in Toronto is one of my favourite things - the Hockey Hall of Fame where you can even take a picture of the Stanley Cup with you next to it. The Stanley cup for those who don't know is the trophy teams win when they win the Grand Finals.

Some of the towns around the Niagara region are quite quaint - like Niagara-On-The-Lake. Well at least I thought the area was quite cute.

Now that I've said all that, I want to go back to Ontario. *sniffs*

The Royal Ontario Museum is a place I went as a child and still could spend all day there(even a week!). It's new addition,The Crystal, looks like an alien dropped it onto the R.O.M.. It's very much love/hate reaction to it! You're a seasoned traveller, but looks like Lord Stanley's cup has gone to the California Ducks!!! Really, that's the hockey team that won! The Royal Botanical Gardens near Niagara totally take your breath away and I forgot to mention the wineries that are near Niagra-On-The -Lake. Such a beautiful area isn't it? Lots and Lots of beautiful places to see around this world of ours!

I didn't know the ROM had a new addition! I'll have to check it out next time I go over.

I read that the Anaheim Ducks beat the Ottawa Senators. That's a shame. I don't think the Ducks are *that* great... although I thoroughly enjoyed the Mighty Ducks movie series when I was younger!

Unfortunately i didn't have time to go to the wineries at Niagara-On-The-Lake, although I'm curious to try out the ice wine.

He,he,the Mighty Ducks!!! I remember watching that one several times. Ice wine is wonderful and we have several wine regions in Ontario,Niagara being the more well known and the upcoming Kingston area wineries. Kingston is a beautiful place and going along the Staint Lawerence to Montreal is quite the trip. Take care Angieh!

Toronto is amazing,I love the entertainment district in the evening with all the people going to plays and the sidewalk cafes busy, fun to walk through. The Distillery District is so interesting,an old area turned to small special shops and always something interesting going on.

Oh..me too and I've never been there! Got all types of cats from all round the world. When they first started years ago, they underestimated the power of some of the cats and they had quite a few break outs!!!
