Holidaying in Salisbury? What to do in my town...

nell18-3 by nell18-3 Young Parent(June 2007) (rank 1st)
When I got the call to do this article

I thought for a while......

What is so great about this place????

No one likes me here, I don't like going anywhere here!!!!!!

but Salisbury is actually a beautiful historical city

The Cathedral Spire is actually the highest spire in Europe

What else is there...............

Salisbury is in Wiltshire, England
Although I actually don't live in the city itself, it is the nearest town/city to me
I am approximately an hour from the south coast of England, also approx an hour from the capital London, so there are lots of commuters who live in this area and still travel to London each day!!

Salisbury Cathedral

The most obvious place I should tell you about is Salisbury Cathedral.
 www.salisburycathedral.org.uk/index.php
Now rather than me give you a whole load of information that I don't really know I thought it was better to post you the link to the Salisbury Cathedral website. When on the homepage you will also see underneath the search buttons, a link to the gallery, there are lots of pictures to enjoy of and around the Cathedral.
The famous artist John Constable once did a beautiful and well know painting of Salisbury Cathedral
It really is a beautiful cathedral and the cathedral grounds around it are lovely to sit in and enjoy picnics before or after your tour of the Cathedral

Wilton House

www.wiltonhouse.co.uk/
Again I am cheating and giving you the link, but there are also lovely pictures in and around Wilton House too
Wilton House, has huge staterooms and landscaped parkland which have been used as a backdrop for several period dramas. Recently the House has been used also in the filming of several feature films such as Sense & Sensibility, The Madness of King George, Mrs Brown and Pride & Prejudice.

Old Sarum Castle

www.english-heritage.org.uk/oldsarum/
Legend has it that this was the original site of Salisbury Cathedral and when they decided to rebuild the Cathedral, an archer was to fire an arrow from Old Sarum Castle, wherever the arrow landed would be where they would build the Cathedral.
Must have been a fantastic bowman as the distance legend would have us believe between Old Sarum and the present Cathedral is almost 2 miles!!!!

Stonehenge

www.stonehenge.co.uk/
Now how can you do an article on Salisbury and not mention our biggest and most famous landmark of all!!!
People come from all over the world to see these stones, I admit they are pretty awesome, but when you pass them most days in your car, they do tend to lose a bit of their magic on you

So, this is my town!!!
As you can see it is all about History, yet at the same time it is also quite a modern city too
However it is definitely out numbered by all the many Historical and beautiful buildings of old

It must be a dad thing
When we first moved to Salisbury, everytime someone came to visit us dad would take them to see the Cathedral, we were like not again!!!!
The  only time I go near it now is to have a picnic in the grounds during the summer LOL

Re: Holidaying in Salisbury? What to do in my town...

Great article!

I havent been to Salisbury since I was 9 - didnt appreciate it then! To me at 9 Stone Henge was just a group of stones I wasnt allowed near!

I love the JC painting of the Cathedral - I come from near Constable Country & have always loved all his paintings anyway - collected them as postcards when I was younger. When I used to have time for such hobbies, hehe!

Its a great painting isn't it?
An absolute classic
I went to Stonehenge once when I was about 4 travelled up from Devon where we lived at the time, I lost my favourite doll there and have held it against the stones ever since

So neat! I love history, really neat when you can see it. And young lady ...any place you're in is made the better for you being there. If you're having problems with people that don't like you...well you don't want to hang out with riffraft anyway!!!
