Introduction about how i have taught my child to read part 1

Deborahsc2203 by Deborahsc2203 Talking Back(June 2007) (rank 112th)

Hello for those that dont know me and what i have been doing since my last baby was born in 2004

this will be a little introduction about what my two year old is able to understand and do

I will then in a  series

brake it all down in parts that will be easy to read so you will be able to help your children also .

I have three boys , a two year old and 16 years old boys

two that are twins have been slow learners since birth and i didnt have the time or the knowledge to know how to help them learn more before they went to school ..

but I will talk about what i have been doing with my two year old for over a year now

Im not 1oo% sure if hes just gifted or lucky etc,,some say he has a photographic memory .

he started off like any other baby saying his first word at 8 months .. Mum and dad ,

My two year old reads over 150 words right now

he also know all his colours and we are working on more unique ones now also

he also knows the whole alphabet , back to front and all the letters ,

hes counting to thirty and also knows all the numbers alone and not in sequence

hes just started the other day to also now count backwards.

he has been catching a ball accurately and also kicking them since he was just over a year old .

He also now just started to read kindergarden books .

He just started to draw a circle and a cross .

knows all his shapes by sight and also by the word.

Hes also been counting in spanish to ten ( that wasnt me that taught him but he watched dora the explora)

He knows all the planets by word and also by what they just look like in pictures.

Hes just started to be intrested in golf and also accurately and very slowely gets the ball in the hole .

He also knows how to hit  the golf ball in the air to make it land on the lounge chair .

He lets you know what move he will be doing so you can watch him

He loves tennis and can also hit the ball when thrown to him with a racket.( he even makes the grunting noise haa)

He now also just the other day threw the ball up in the air and hit it .

He loves balls and kicks them into his mini goals, he dosent stumble he can kick it straight

sings the whole song by himself of twinkle twinkle little star and a few others.

He also Minics all dance moves .

He learnt to jump at 18 months old with two feet without falling over

He also connects the dvd player to the Tv

He uses the foxtell remote to find his kids shows and always gets it right on the station .

since he was small and couldnt really do much i went and got him a few baby einstein dvds just to put on tv sometimes

he used to smile at them when i put it on for him ,

every time he had his bath .. when i was towel drying him off i used to talk to him saying all the body parts to him everytime i touched them

ie ,, this is your foot and these are your toes and count them as i also dryed them off .

i also sung twinkle twinkle little star every day to him before he could talk

when he was just over a year old i used to throw him little foam balls and tell him to throw it back and show him how to do it ,

i didnt expect him to be able to know how to be able to throw them but just have fun with him playing with them together

i did this everyday  with lots of giggles and praise .

about a month later he caught the ball and i just said wow good boy but also thought it was just a fluke

so i did it again and again ,, he caught it everytime and also threw the ball right back to me ,

he loves balls and i started so i just wrote the word ball down in large letters on a bit of cardboard

and pointed to the word and said ball this is the word ball ,I showed him this word every day .

i started to do this with a few things ( not knowing if he would pick up on the written word or not )

mainly things that took his intrest ,

he loves to look at pictures in books we have heaps now

but started him off with just simple pictures of balls in a book and cats etc,,

I do have vidoes  of him doing all of this and when i know how to link it up I will be doing so ,,

UPDATE

Ive just been messing with Bebo , i have two older videos of when he was about 21 months of him reading and also counting and saying the alphabet ,hes way more advanced then this video now but its a start to give you all an idea of where im comming from with this  , ive added them to Bebo

i have soo much more but as still working out how to add them off my camcorder to the site

ive also added one fun video of him not being happy because its not saturday .heres the link hope this works

Great article! Your little man sounds a lot like mine. Jack is 2 next week & can hit a golf ball, catch and throw, kick a football, knows his colours, counts, knows all his body parts & I swear by the way he sits down with a book he can read! I will be writing down words of things that he loves now thanks to your article! Thankyou & can't wait to read more!

Re: Introduction about how i have taught my child to read part 1
Hi
Did you know that our children miss out on the biggest learning curve in their lives.
A 18 month - 3 years will absorb more information than we do in all our lives.
We just don't take the time to teach them.
Congrats for taking the time
My nana taught me to read.  By the time i was 3 i could read a novel and understand it.  Shame I don't learn so fast now hey.
When Megan got to school she was reading at a year 3 level with the learning system we have
We are teaching Jalan as well.  Having 2 teenagers helps on this side.
Australia is one of the few places that does not tap into the childs natural learning process.
One of the reasons home schooling works so well.  Schools inhibit their development and natural curiosity by telling them to sit down and shut up.  Sad hey....
All it takes is a lot of time and making it like play and they
learn naturally
Luv Deb
