Leg Cramps during pregancy

Marlena by Marlena Young Parent(June 2007) (rank 12th)
I asked a question last week about weather or not my leg cramps where normal or not (thanks for the answers).  I decided to look it up further so I could find the cause of it to prevent it from happening.  I have tried a bunch of things and here
is what I found worked for me.  I rotate my ankles and wiggle my toes when I am sitting and in the middle of the night.  I try not to stretch in the middle of the night and in the morning if I can help it because I am scared my leg will cramp up. I try not to stand or sit for too long.  If I have cleaning to do I don't so it all at once but instead I clean one room then sit  for a bit.  You don't really want to stand for to long or sit for to long.  If my muscles are sore then I have a warm bath and that tends to help before bed after a long day.  Sleeping in a comfortable position helps and I sleep with a pillow between my knees.  The may one that I noticed worked is drink lots of water.  I find if I don't drink enough watch some days thats when my legs cramp up in the middle of the night.  When I do get these leg cramps at first I cant really move my leg at all and all I wanna do is scream, but once I can kinda move it I stretch my leg and point my toes  upwards.  I find it sore for most of the day but it does go away.  if it is a constant cramp i would talk to your doctor because it could be a blood clot which is common with pregnancy.

Re: Leg Cramps during pregancy
i used magnesium tissue salts for cramps, perfectly safe and leg cramps are a classic symptom of magnesium deficiency.

Oh i remember the leg cramps! Once they are there my partner used to have to massage my leg to try to ease the pain as I was unable to stand with them, it helped!

Thanks for the advice I will definately take in on board when I am pregnant again.

 Great advice Marlena

The only leg cramps I remember having while pregnant, were the ones in my calves that would wake me up half way through the night. They were very painful, and I found the best thing would be to get up, stretch the leg and walk around straight away.

Re: Leg Cramps during pregancy
Yep the magnesium deficiency was the cause of my leg cramps when I was preggy. But I also suffered from such severe reflux that I had to be prescribed medication for it as the usual rennies and mylanta type remedies didn't work. The stuff I got was called magnesium trisilicate..so it hlped relieve two prblems at once.
