keep your toddler safe in a car park

georgiepar by georgiepar Talking(June 2007) (rank 167th)

I just wanted to share this with you all.  Shopping days used to be painful with talea and shaylie..  Talea running around while I’m trying to trying put shaylie in the car.  This is very dangerous as she could run out in front of a car.

A few weeks ago I had the idea to get her to put her hands on the car while I was putting shaylie in the car.  This kept her hands busy and kept her in the one spot.  And it’s working we walk out of the shops or daycare walk towards the car and all I have to say to her is hands on car.  And she does it.  It’s great obviously because shaylie is only 7 moths old and talea is walking I have to put shaylie in the car first.  I even do it in the driveway at home just so she knows, that this is what we do at the car.

I feel I should say though I always keep her right next to me she knows the spot where to put her hands, she is still within my reach.  And I’m watching her at all times to.  Yes the hands do come off every now and then.  All I say is hand on car and she’s got them straight back on the car.  Just something I wanted to share it’s a great idea

Thanks georgie

Re: keep your toddler safe in a car park
Good tip. Is she old enough to jump in the babies side and then get into her own seat while you are belting up bubby or would she just go freeballing all over the car? Ha ha. I used to do that and they would usually get in there seat and then I could just go over and belt them up and I wouldn't have to worry about the road.

yeah she would just freeball. plus it's a 44 wheel drive bit high for her to just jump in . good idea though

Re: keep your toddler safe in a car park

That's what we do. If we're parked on the side of the road (not a carpark) everyone gets in the footpath side door and climbs over the baby seat, then I go round the other side and belt them in if needed. No children on the road side, ever.

I always remember the phrase 'accidents take seconds to hapen and lifetimes to recover from'

Re: keep your toddler safe in a car park
thats a good idea. when Charlie was smaller i used to have them both in the trolley and put one in at a time or get them both in at the same time and then do them up.

Re: keep your toddler safe in a car park

Great tip ,I used to do as Hermy does but if I had my hands full with bags they had to hold the bag  that I was carrying they thought they were helping me carry the bag but  it kept them safe. Most of the time they would all get in then I would go around and buckle them up or check on the older ones. When my oldest son was about 3 he took off in the car park ,my husband gave him a smack on the bottom and growled at him should have seen the look a woman gave us that was 12 yrs ago.Don't know if it was because he got a smack or because our child ran off, sometimes you just can't win.
