RSV...Respiratory Syncytial Virus...

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(June 2007) (rank 3rd)
I was watching sunrise(the morning show) the other day and there was a piece on there where they talked about a Virus called RSV...So I thought oh well I didnt know that much about it so I thought I would share this with all of you...My daughter caught this when she was younger and was hospitalised with it due to catching bronciaialitis...

RSV is short for Respiratory Syncytial Virus, It is the major cause or respiratory sickness in all ages...But all ages do not have the same effect...

  • In adults...This virus causes mild cold symptoms, Just like the everyday cold...
  • In children of school age...This virus causes a cold usually with a bronchial cough...
  • In infants...This virus can cause more than just the above it can cause bronchiolitis and even pneumonia...
  • The risks for premature babies are even higher due to their lungs not being as strong as full term babies...

The concern with this virus is re infection of this virus can happen and if and recently there has been concerns that a baby that catches this in the first year of their life may develope asthma later in life...

Rsv is a really common virus that spreads like wildfire through schools, day cares and homes...The incubation period from the time the person is exposed to this is 3 to 5 days...Once the infection is caught the infected person can be contagious to others for up to a week....

Rsv is really dangerous to children under one year old with lung problems asthma or heart problems as it can cause bronchialitis...babies with this will more often than not be hospitalized...

A doctor can diagnose RSV by a nasal swab to the nose...

If your child is nto hospitalized then the treatments at home are just cough and cold medicines to relieve the symptoms...Make sure you get something to help with the wheezing and the chest congestion that goes along with this virus...

i know this one is short and sweet but I thought it should be out there for all to read about it...Thanks for reading...
Have a great day
Cheers
Angie
