Mouth Ulcers

hermy by hermy Talking Back(June 2007) (rank 43rd)

My son suffers very badly with mouth ulcers so I thought I would write a little about them.

                         Mouth ulcers appear as several painful white or yellowish circular raised spots. They usually affect the softer parts of the mouth. They are very painful for the first few days, they last about one to two weeks. Large ulcers may last weeks or months and can be accompanied by fatigue, fever and swollen lymph nodes.

                          Mouth ulcers can be due to stress, a bad immune response or viral infection. They can happen due to an allergic reaction, anaemia, coeliac disease or Crohn’s disease.

                   If you are prone to mouth ulcers regularly using mouth washes can prevent them from occurring. If you are unlucky, like my son and still gets them, a really good remedy that we use is a damp tea bag, my son puts it on his ulcer and it helps in easing the pain, it is said that this neutralises the acids that eat into the sore. I have got my son some multivitamins as well, as a teenager he doesn’t like eating vegetables. This is helping him ….

                         We were advised by the doctor to make sure my sons diet is high in;

n      Iron rich foods

n      Folate

n      Vitamin B12

            That during attacks he only eats bland foods…….

                       There is no conventional treatment for mouth ulcers, but if they are too painful you GP may prescribe something for the pain. Natural remedies are best in helping with the symptoms and preventing mouth ulcers from recurring……

        When to seek medical advice;

n      If your ulcers last more than 2 weeks

n      You get sores often and they appear in groups

n      When they are very painful

                  I hope this helps……..

Re: Mouth Ulcers

I suffer from bad mouth ulcers when I haven't had enough sleep - they get bigger and bigger and sorer and sorer until day 8 or 9 then bang, I have a no pain but big "hole" somewhere in my mouth, which heals within a day or 2 after that.  I have always found, leaving salty (as salty as you can take) water in the bathroom to rinse during the night, during the day, as soon as I wake up, whenever the pain gets bad, is the only thing to take away the pain.  Other than that, betadine mouth wash (usually for sore throat) is also good if used from when it first starts to control the virus spreading to the rest of the mouth and reduces the pain and time over the course that the ulcer is there for.  I never heard of tea bags........I will definitely give this a go.  Thanks for sharing this idea.  I have been wondering what to put in a young child's mouth if they get an ulcer (just hoping they dont get them like I do!) and a tea bag would be safe for them.
