Glandular Fever

hermy by hermy Talking Back(June 2007) (rank 42nd)

                            Glandular fever is caused by the Epstein - Barr virus, this virus is transmitted in the saliva by coughing, sneezing or kissing.

Symptoms;

n      Fatigue

n

    Fever

n      Severe sore throat

n      Swollen lymph nodes

n      Loss of appetite

n      Headaches

n      General achenes

                The spleen and liver may become enlarged. In more severe cases the person may became jaundice.

                      These symptoms may be misdiagnosed as tonsillitis. If it is treated with ampicillin, the person develops a rash, because glandular fever is a viral infection it is better not to be treated with antibiotics, fluid and rest are important to help children overcome the infection.

                   The symptoms may last a week or two, in same cases recovery may take several months. When glandular has been diagnosed try these tips;

n      Consume lots of immune boosting nutrients, because appetite is low make sure you eat several light meals, rather then a few big ones

n      Drink at least eight glasses of water or juice daily

n      Try soft food and foods with fibre

     Treatment;

n      Make sure you see a doctor if you think you have glandular fever, a blood test will determine if you have

n      Make sure you have plenty of rest

n      Take a non – steroidal anti-inflammatory drug to ease the symptoms

n      Do not do vigorous activities until your doctor tells you that your spleen has returned to normal

I hope this helps………..

Re: Glandular Fever

It can be shocking indeed - everyone seems to have their own terrible story. Here's a blog story http://richelectron.blogspot.com/2008/04/overcoming-glandular-fever.html on it.

It can be pretty shocking :(

I ended up very ill in hospital with it.

My body ended up shutting down totally and I spent time in CCU and ICU

It was such a scarey time - The consultant specialest told my family that I was very sick and could have died!!! :(

Re: Glandular Fever
My friend went to the doc feeling very lethargic & sick - ended up doing an ultrasound & she had an enlarged spleen. The doc panicked & flew her to the nearest city - only to have her discharged when blood tests showed glandula fever. Then she had to get back! Doc should have done blood test for this first - tested for other things but not glandula fever - waste of a trip & very stressfull for her & her family! Nice to have this here for people to see what to look for. Well done!

Re: Glandular Fever
Hi
Another side effect of glandular fever is pregnancy lol
My doctor said i had a virus and sent me home once again without examining me
I changed doctors and he immediately  diagnosed glandular fever and did the blood test to confirm it.  He was right
After 3 months of not feeling any better I discovered I was 6 weeks  pregnant lol which was why I was not picking up
Made me a lot more tired than usual through the pregnancy I can tell you.
Luv Deb

Re: Glandular Fever
LOL.....sometimes we have to change doctors to get the right result......i have also changed doctors not because of an illness but because after Ryan i did not get a period and my old doctor kept telling me to think my self lucky most women would love not to have a period....changed doctors and i though i had a tumor in my belly ....did have, " Ashlei"...was 19 weeks pregnant, LOL.....you must have felt very run down what with glandular fever and carrying a baby .....it's funny how some doctors just think you making things up......i feel for you, i know how tired i was through my pregnancies , and i didn't have glandular fever......thanks for your comment Deb...and sorry for raving on....regards Sandra xxx

Re: Glandular Fever
Great advice. My son has tonsillitis at the moment and the doctor did say that glandular fever has similar symptoms but he didn't mention a rash. Will be sure to look out for it though!!.

Re: Glandular Fever
yes it has simmilar symptoms to tonsillitis and when antibiotics are prescribed, you will end up with the rash.....if a rush develops make sure to stop the antibiotics straight away.....i hope it's not.....thank you for your comment....regards Sandra xxx

Re: Glandular Fever
Excellent!

Rest, rest, rest. It's the best thing you could do. I was young when I had glandular, and thought I knew everything and would be fine and I ended up with chronic fatigue syndrome. I wish I'd just done what I was told taken it easy now, and let my body heal.

Re: Glandular Fever

Well written Sandra. I have had this and it is no fun. I was basically in bed for 9 months and it took twice as long to get over it fully. It took the doctors ages to get the diagnosis right. I was given anti-biotics and I got the rash. I was so sick. Thanks for such an informative article.

xx's Rach

Re: Glandular Fever
