Getting your child to sleep alone .

emmie by emmie Talking Back(June 2007) (rank 29th)

Are you having difficulties getting your child to go to bed when they are used to falling asleep around you ?

When my child got used to sleeping around me she used to fall asleep in the living room with a blanket and juice. In the end i had enough and started lying on her bed with her until she fell asleep.

A few days later i would get on the floor and lye down there until she fell asleep.

Then i put a special chair in her room it was my chair and only i was allowed to sit on it  and i put this nxt to her bed.

A few days later i moved the chair to her side of the door i explained to her i would be staying right nxt to the door and make sure they know your wont be going anywhere.

A few days later i sat on the outside of her door on the chair before leaving the child in bed alone you need secure them a bit by letting them know you will be right outside their door if they want you or feel scared you just need to shout mummy/dadddy and at first they may call but they will be in their own bed going to sleep by theirself .

Re: Getting your child to sleep alone .
Yes, did something similar myself - sat on the floor by the door, sat outside the door in full view, sat along the landing out of sight, sat on the top of the stairs in sight, sat halfway down stairs where my hand could be seen if I held it up on request, walked around downstairs, hurray! I did each for 2 weeks, as I'd sat holding DD1s hand for a couple of years at bedtime and thought it only fair to be gentle in breaking such a longstanding habbit. I got some great book reading done!

Re: Getting your child to sleep alone .

Absolutely!

Some of my friends couldnt understand how I could stand to sit and hold her hand to get her to sleep for so long (2 years), but it was great to have complete silence (except for the Classical Music on the radio) and some genuine thinking time after the chaos of the day!
