Thought that I would do a piece on these two towns as I spent some of my childhood growing up there and my parents still live there so we visit every school holidays!!
Both of these towns come alive during the summer holidays. The population triples with holiday-makers and
day-trippers. Victor Harbour is the bigger of the two towns and there are plenty of things to do.
PORT ELLIOT
The beach at Port Elliot is called Horseshoe Bay so can probably guess that it is shaped like a horseshoe. On a hot day you need to get here early to make sure that you get a spot on the beach as it gets pretty crowded. There is The Flying Fish Cafe, a playground, BBQ’s and the surf life saving club. There is also a walking trail that goes around the foreshore.
The Go-Kart track at Port Elliot is very popular and also has tandem karts for those that are too young to drive themselves.
There is a market at the Lakala on the third Saturday of every month and over the holidays it is sometimes more often. Lots of bargains, hand made items and fruit and veg. Best of all my parents live very close to the reserve so we can get there early to search for good bargains!!!
VICTOR HARBOUR
Greenhills Adventure Park is great fun. I haven’t been there for a few years so it has probably grown since I last saw it. There is a par 3 golf course, 18 hole mini golf, water slides, climbing wall, archery, moon bikes, aqua bikes, a maze… there is more but you get the idea. You can’t do everything in one day kind of place!!!
The Steam Ranger Cockle Train runs from Victor Harbour, through Port Elliot and Middleton and stops at Goolwa then it turns around and goes back again. It runs on weekends and during the school holidays and it is staffed by volunteers.
Urimbirra Wildlife Park is known for its Koala and Wombat close-ups, the opportunity to feed the roaming kangaroos and wallabies. Fun for the younger kids is the Children's Farmyard or for the bigger kids, why not watch the spectacular crocodile feeding! There is picnic and BBQ areas with a kiosk and souvenir shop also on site.
Granite Island is connect to Victor Harbour by a jetty that you can walk across or take the horse drawn tram ride. You can walk around the island and see the granite formations and the penguins. There is a restaurant, kiosk and a souvenir shop. Where you board the tram at the Victor side there is also a mini golf course and sideshow rides.
The Whale Centre is a great resource for information on the Southern Right Whales which can be seen quiet easily in the waters from June to September. It is a cheap place to take the family and has many interesting things to look at.
There are numerous other things to see and do too such as art galleries and a rose garden and miniature village. Out a bit further there are wineries and over in Goolwa (where Storm Boy was mainly filmed) is the Coorong National Park where the Murray river meets the sea. there are numerous types of accommodation but places like holiday homes and apartments book out quickly.
Thanks for reading and I hope you visit one day,
Sandy.
