Good books about birthing

bella2795 by bella2795 Walking(June 2007) (rank 500+)

Hello all,

This is my first entry, written as a first-time dad to little Bella who arrived on June 7th.

One thing my wife and I craved during our pregnancy was good, well-written and easy-to-read books about pregnancy, the birthing experience and about being first-time parents. We also

watched plenty of DVDs and documentary-style programs to ensure we were as educated as we could be about the whole thing.

(On that note, imagine our surprise when we attended the hospital class at 30 weeks, and there were couples there who did not know some basic things - One woman, at 36 weeks pregnant, did not know what a 'breech' presentation was! Am I being too harsh?!?)

One book stood out for us, way above all the others. It is called 'Birth Skills', and is written by Juju Sundin with Sarah Murdoch. It is published by Allen & Unwin. I saw a quick review on a TV show about it when Jessica was about 25 weeks pregnant, so I ordered it over the web and had it sent to her as a gift.

The advice was well written and easy to follow; the case studies and personal stories of other mums were interesting and very helpful; the overall approach to birth being a natural process was reassuring. Full marks from us!

Our actual birth went really well, the midwives repeatedly commented how well prepared Jessica was, and how focussed and in control she was during the whole experience. Jess puts this down to following the book as best she could!

I'm not sure about the protocols or ethics of promoting any particular product or service on this website, but I have no commercial interest in this book whatsoever - Other than being a very satisfied customer. The best $40-odd bucks I spent during the whole pregnancy!

Cheers,

Matt.

Re: Good books about birthing

Just on the 'What to Expect' books, we have relied on these heavily, mainly for the factual or 'scientific' stuff we needed to know. While highly technical, 'What to expect when you're expecting' is easy to read, and it wasn't hard to track down the relevant pages if you were looking for something specific. It wasn't a 'cover-to-cover' read though, in the way 'Birth Skills' is written. More of a solid reference book.

We came across some 'dud' books too...I might review some of them sometime soon!

Matt.

Great advice Matty, I hadn't heard of that book.  I found most books to be clinical and hard to read as they didn't make being pregnant or giving birth very pleasant at all. I like the sound of this, the fact that it has case studies and personal stories from real mum's makes it very attractive.

I will definitely check this out as a gift for the next pregnant person I know (that's when you really need to be spoilt - babies get everything afterward).

Re: Good books about birthing

Congratulations on the birth of Bella! And a great first article

I too craved information, I watched birthing shows (usually with my hands over my face) I read the books, I really like the 'what to expect when you are expecting' by Hathaway and someone else. I memorized the giving birth sections and felt really in control of everything... However, as it turned out the information contained in the books was nothing like what I experienced, and was not of much value to me. Saying that, I highly recommend everyone to read as much as they can prior to birth!
