The Simple Life

nell18-3 by nell18-3 Young Parent(June 2007) (rank 2nd)

My boys used to think that as children they could only exist with modern gadgets

What a shock when they realise much more fun is available

Much more energising and fulfilling

And really simple and uncomplicated

Its called Real Living!!!

We all have the modern gadgets and we all listen to our children playing their games on the computer insisting they can't stop until they have completed the level they are on or it would all be wasted!

Whilst they are doing that, they are really wasting Real Living

We have started a new habit since moving in with my parents, I collect them from school, they change into their play clothes and we go out, yes their crazymother too. We get our bikes out and ride up into the local woods and go mad. We get dusty, dirty, fall off but most importantly we have great fun!

Its fantastic to go back and take your child to do the things we all enjoyed as children ourselves. Funny as it may seem, we are never too old to enjoy the things from our childhood. My boys think its fantastic I mean going on dirty muddy trucks with their Mum riding behind squealing with pleasure as we get caught up in overgrowth and prickles, riding over hidden tree trunks and laughing as their Mum gets to her feet again after falling!!!!

We are having a great time doing all these simple things, we haven't had so much fun in a very long time. This weekend in one of the woods we found a "basic homemade" rope swing through the trees, of course I had to give it a go And whilst I am screaming and hanging on for dear life......what were my boys doing???.......The obvious of course! Rolling on the grass laughing!!! Oh well it was worth it to hear them laughing like that

I often think back to what i used to do growing up and think its not fair that my children aren't able to have that kind of fun because the world is not as safe, Well I found the perfect way...... Go with them and Join in

We all should remember our childhood and teach our children how to live the Simple Life too

I agree. Check out www.storyofstuff.com. It was really eye-opening on how obsessed with stuff we really are. Getting back to basics is so important these days.

Re: The Simple Life

i understand where you are coming from, i think for young children it is very important to see there is life away from games and tv and i congratulate you in doing so. I know that technology can catch up with you, but i wouldn't say im a mad tv addict or game addict. i hardly play games or watch tv. i mainly use the computer, i miss as a kid going out and playing such as the trampoline or playing footy at the park.....at least your kiddos will grow up having a good appreciation of the outdoors.

Re: The Simple Life

This is an inheritance that we all have to leave for our future generations - a love and appreciation of nature and creation. No matter what country or nationality. Well done. What an added blessing of being able to learn the skill from the older generation of grandparents, too!

Re: The Simple Life

Another Excellent article! Great advice! It's sad how you never see kids out playing Christmas morning like you did when we were young. They are all to busy inside playing their  video games.

Bring back the simple life!!

Cheers Dee

Re: The Simple Life

That's so true.  My hubby would take my eldest out on their bikes in the summer and they both loved it.  I was so jealous because I didn't know how to ride a bike so I decided to learn and now that I have almost  learned how to I would recommend it to anyone, its great going out as a family on our bikes and swimming and just playing with the kids.  I love colouring with my 4 year old and cooking with my 11 year old we need to do more things with our children computer games can be very solitary well unless you learn to play with them alongside your kids.

Good advice love Maria x

Re: The Simple Life
A worthy Lesson, and one that we all need to learn constantly.  Although technology enhances our lives, it is fantastic that a walk in the park, a camping trip in the country or sitting down to read a book can also add wonderful quality to our lives and our family relationships.
Peace

I really enjoyed this . . ..  Great article . .

I often get annoyed at my inlaws for buying the kids all the latest gadgets . . .  I like to give my kids basic things so their imaginations develop and grow . . .

Re: The Simple Life

Fantastic advice Helen. The more families make their own fun together, the more closer they are i think and a deeper bond is formed.

P.S. There is nothing more important than family & enjoying time together

Re: The Simple Life

What a great thing to do. We often take Amy to a place where I used to play as a child and she loves it too.

There is a documentary on tonight, I think its on BBC 1, about a class of children who have their gadgets and t.v's taken away for two weeks, apparently their concerntration improves and so do their energy levels, should be an interesting one to watch.

Thanks for some great advice, keep up the good work.

Love Clarex

Hi
We take ours to the park and I love getting on the roundabout.  Cept the one at the park is really cool it has ponies to sit on so I sit on them singing When I grow up I want a pony...all the kids and some parents laugh as well...
I have kids so i can still play on the swings
Awesome.
Luv Deb
