Kids and Pets...Owning a pet in the early years helps with allergies....

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(June 2007) (rank 3rd)
I was surfing the net AGAIN as I do on a regular basis and come across an interesting thing that I would like to share with all Minti families...You see I have always been under the belief that having pets around your home can lead to more allergies for your kids later in  life...

Well it seems this is not necessarily true...There has been some research done that knocks that thought on the head...It actually seems that kids who have at least two pets in their home in the first year of their life have less allergies and it actually helps them to build defences against allergies and even asthma....

It is widely thought now by alot of allergists that the reason our kids have alot of allergies is we are leaving a way too CLEAN life...

I remember back to being a kid and sitting there with our golden retriever as I ate my ice cream from the Mr Whippy van and looking to see if my parents were looking as I shared with Lady our dog...A lick for me a lick for her...LOL I would have a coronary if one of my kids did that today...But would it really be that hurtful?  I am still alive and kicking...

When little kids play with cats and dogs they get licked...In this lick there is alot of gram-negative bacteria that may be what changes the way the kids immune system responds...The lick then gives them exposure to higher levels of something called "endotoxins" that is the breakdown toxin from the gram-negative bacteria...

It was also put forward that kids who live on farms and are regularly exposed to animals have less allergies than city kids...When you really think about this it is really very true...

I thought this was a really interesting thing to put out on Minti and something that I thought made alot of sense...So if you were putting it off getting that pet for your little one to enjoy...Then maybe have a read of some articles on the net about it...It seems all allergists agree having a pet or two is healthy for our kids...So have a chat with your doctor and see what they say....

These are just my thoughts I wanted to share...
Have a great day
Cheers
Angie

hmmm we have fish, oh well! But I agree, we are far to sterile and I'm sure it puts our health at more risk - among my friends there is a sickness bug going round at the moment. We think we know which baby is passing it round (generous baby!) and he was at mine Friday sharing toys with my baby. She's absolutely fine, and I'm about 90%, which may be a coincidence of course. In fact the mums & kids who seem to have suffered the worst are the most obsessed by cleaning! And one of my friends commented that since she got less obsessed by cleaning in the last year her kids are finally getting sick less often. Coincidence?

I am also a strong believer in this. I think we over sterilize things which leads to health issues in the long run.

Great article Angie.

I too was concerned about allergies with children regarding pets....so we never got a dog until my girl was 7yr.

Well my son is 4yr and he has grown up with the family dogs and puppies along the way....

( or is it my dogs , have grown up with kids..lol )

Pets and children do mix in many ways...as long as adults, remember....

CONSTANT SUPERVISION.

Lucky as we appear to have abit of abit of a managery at the moment. I might print this and give it to my resident germ-a-phobe from mothers group. She doesnt like coming to my place as my cat in sometimes inside. grrrr. We have always had pets and always will, but this is good to keep in mind next time someone has a go at me about it! Thanks

Hi
I was surfing the net AGAIN as I do on a regular basis and come across an interesting thing that I would like to share with all Minti families..

Ha ha only a semi regular basis now the rest is spent writting articles hehehehe

I hate the words gram-negative bacteria I am learning far too much about its effects on Jalan

And did you know that if you already have a cat it is not worth getting rid of it if you develop allergies or have a baby with allergies  as it takes 7 years to get the germ that causes the allergy out of your house.  Unless you have a totally cat free house (a cat has never been in the house) then the allergen lives there already.
Some people think it is the fur on the animal and it actually isn't  <<<<  Just a totally useless fact i thought I would share with you all

And pets are known to lower stress....Any one want my animals to lower their stress??
Great article Ang

Interesting to know this! I grew up with pet cats throughout childhood & beyond. I've never been allergic to anything. We now have a cat that's 'adopted' us. It was at this house when we moved here, having been left here by previous tenants. I didn't want to get a pet until Isabella was older. So I haven't warmed to the cat properly yet, and he stays outdoors 100% of the time. Might be a good thing to keep him around though for this reason! Great article, Kylie *

Are you sure we didn't grow up in the same house? LOL  I read something about that recently too, and I have to agree. Everyone has become germaphobes and now we have antibiotic resistant bacterias now, which makes you wonder what is really going on in our world.
