My Crystal Bell...Glory Boxes...

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(June 2007) (rank 3rd)
A long time ago a woman was married off to a man and came with a dowry...It was property that the womn owned and it was used to entice a man into a marriage sometimes...This has since been called a  glory box...

Glory boxes are a place where you and your daughter can place things in when you shop for things like linen, glasses, toasters irons and little trinkets that can remind them of you and their childhood home and help them to set up their new one when they leave yours...

With my mum she did alot of the shopping for my Glory Box on her own like irons and things like that but we also spent days where I had had a ball shopping with her as a teenager and we had bought just a small ornament or something special that reminded me of that time...

It was actually that, that bought on the thoughts for this article...You see this morning I was going through some of my ornaments that I have packed away as I have not found the display cabinet I want to match my other furniture...The box they were in had been wet and I needed to change the box to keep them safe...I came across a little crystal bell that my mother had bought me when I was about 14 years of age...I remember the day so well...

We went out to the markets in the morning at Ipswich in Qld and we walked them and bought alot of little things like plants and some craft things for me...We stopped half way through the markets and sat down and had a banana split...A lady was behind mum laughing loudly and she tripped back into my mum and mums sundae went all over her...

It was the giggles and the time we spent together that day that made me remember it so well...You see when I was 14 my mum was working full time and having a Sunday together was wonderful...On the way out we came across this little stand that had ornaments in crystal and I picked up this little bell...It was gorgeous and one i really liked...My mum looked at me and then the stall holder and bought it and said for you Glory box sweetheart...We then went home...

When I moved out and was given this glory box...As i unpacked it all the useful things were used and worn out long ago but all the keepsakes with the memories attached are still here...I also got alot of doilies and things for my Glory Box that were made by my Nanna...I still have them too...

You see my Glory box was one full of hope and memories and a little chest of treasures...I have too started this for my two older girls and we do the shopping things where something is purchased that will have little memories for my girls when they move out...The Glory box  is a tradition I feel that has been lost a fair bit in our society and is something that should not be gone...It is not only something that can be useful when your child moves out but also something that can be full of happy memories for them...

Sitting here thinking there really is no reason I could not start one for my boys either I suppose...Maybe I should start a new tradition here in our family...

These are just my thoughts I wanted to share...

Thanks for reading
Have a great day
Cheers
Angie

Hey Deb, Depends if your doing the box for when they move out or traditionally like when they get married.. if your doing it for when they move out, they will pretty much need the same things girls would need to set up a home.. in Dannys case sauspans if he is still the lil chef! xx

Re: My Crystal Bell...Glory Boxes...

You're right...I think the Glory Box has been lost over the years.

There's no reason why a family can't start one for the boys as well.

I think they are wonderful...and have several items ready for when my girl does leave the nest.

Hi
Megan has the beginnings of her glory box int he top of her wardrobe.
We are yet to be able to afford the box she wants.  When she leaves home it will have everything in it to set up her first  home/flat unit etc for the kitchen.
It is the little things that cost so much when you move out.
We are doing one for Rowan as well.
Great article
Luv Deb

Re: My Crystal Bell...Glory Boxes...

What a sweet story. I had a glory box or sorts, but it was more just bits and pieces that my parents didnt need anymore, either they got a new one or just didnt use it enough. It was fantastic though, I moved out and had everything I needed, and although I didnt help choose it at all it was all still my parents and that was just what I needed once I was away from home.

You have motivated me, I am going to start one for my daughter, now i just need to find the perfect box!!!

Re: My Crystal Bell...Glory Boxes...

I made myself one, I converted my old toy chest (it's like a tin pirate treasure chest actually...mum got them at a trash and treasure in the '70's) into my Glory Box.  I filled it with useful things I found in op-shops begining when I was 13 or 14 I suppose and added to it in bits and bobs over the eyars.  My daughter ended up wearing a pair of patent leather brand new shoes I found in it and a pair of funky roller skating cat p.j's I had bought new for it as well.  Like you I had many doilies and matching table clothes and aprons all embroided by my Grandma or Great Grandma, some tea towels I'd colected, some frilly pillow cases.  A lot of it was very dated and I donated some that I knew I no longer wanted back to the op-shops, but quite a lot is being used or has been used and I've got to say, that puting those p.j's and shoes on my real life daughter that I had dreamed of since I was 14 never failed to put a smile on my face.  Tey have been lovingly re-packed awaiting the possible number 2 one day.  I shall help my daughter make one of her own too one day.  It's a lovely thing to have.

Great Article Ange. xo
