Aromatherapy oils to avoid during pregnancy

sluxton by sluxton Talking(June 2007) (rank 85th)

I love essential oils but if you are pregnant you should be aware of certain oils to avoid.

According to Nerys Purcheson ("Handbook of Aromartherapy"),

"Oils to avoid during the first 4 months of pregnancy

German and Roman chamomile

Geranium

Lavender

Rose

Oils which may be unsafe to use during pregnancy

Basil

Cedarwood

Celery Seed

Cinnamon

Clary Sage

Fennel

Galbanum

Hyssop

Jasmine

Juniper

Marjoram

Melissa

Myrrh

Nutmeg

Parsley

Pennyroyal

Peppermint

Rosemary

Thyme

So although aromatherapy is a lovely way to relax.  Do read as much as you can about the oils if you are pregnant, particularly in the first 4 months.

Re: Aromatherapy oils to avoid during pregnancy

um - just wondering if anyone knows what the shelf life of oils should be?

Re: Aromatherapy oils to avoid during pregnancy

The shelf life of essential oils will vary with the type of oil. Most good quality oils will have an expiry or use by date on the label. This is a good indicator but assumes the oils have been kept in optimum conditions.

The 2 enemies of essential oils are heat and light. That's why they are sold in dark glass bottles. Best to keep them in a dark cupboard or box away from any windows (sun) or other sources of heat. Unless you live in a very hot area they usually don't need to be refrigerated.

Shelf life can vary from as little as 12 months for some citrus oils (due to them being expressed rather than distilled) to many years for some oils such as patchouli or some wood oils. In fact there are some people who claim patchouli actually improves with age!

A few other things to consider-

  • blends usually don't last as long as single oils
  • essential oil dilutions will probably last only a few months (the vegetable oil will go rancid before the essential oils go off)
  • as a bottle is used the air in the bottle can cause the oil to oxidise - so if you by essential oils in larger bottles it is a good idea to decant them into smaller ones as you use them to reduce the amount of airspace.

Hope this helps!

Re: Aromatherapy oils to avoid during pregnancy

It depends on what books you read and what studies you read to decide what is safe and what is not. I have read some books that say after the first 4 months any oils are safe to use and others say that at no time at all during a pregnancy should aromatherapy oils be used. I think this article gives a pretty good guideline of the generally accepted oils during pregnancy so good job sluxton

Good Article.

I would also add to the list of oils not to use during pregnancy -
Cedarwood
Citronella
Clove
Sage
Aniseed or Star Anise

Also remember if you do use any of the safe oils to use half the normal dilution rate.

Great advice, a lot of people don't realise this, I am a huge aromatherapy user, I just gave them all away while pregnant, but there are some safe ones x
