Avoid cracked nipples in breastfeeding......

sluxton by sluxton Talking(June 2007) (rank 102nd)

Yes, all the midwives and breastfeeding associations say you just need to put breast milk on your nipples to help prevent them cracking and heal the cracks - that is nature's way.

Well, for me and for many of my friends, it was never enough and it was definitely a well talked about topic in our Mothers' Group when the babies were newborns.

I found that bepanthan was great - put on before and after a feed, but just use a wet face washer to wipe them before baby feeds and do the milk think as well.

Sorbelene was ok but not heavy enough.

Also, whilst you are pregnant you could use this recipe to help: (also taken from Nerys Purcheson's "Handbook of Aromatherapy")

2 tablespoons calendula infused oil or sweet almond oil

1 teaspoon wheat germ oil

10 drops carrot essential oil

15 drops chamomile essential oil

Mix all the oils together in a small bottle and shake to blend.  Leave for 4 days before using so the oils have time to synergise or combine well.

Massage the oil well into the nipples and surrounding area in a firm but gentle squeezing motion.  Wash all traces of oil away thoroughly before breast-feeding your baby.

So dont leave yourself open to the pain!  Be prepared!  Cracked nipples when feeding just take the beauty out of the whole breastfeeding experience.

Great advice and I found that Bepanthen, along with breastmilk, helped with that.  As PHOENIX said though it was caused by poor attachment and once that was dealt with i had no more problems!

I found the only thing that worked for me was Lanolin as you dont have to wash it off between feeds. I found that wiping the creams off my nipples all the time only added to the soreness.

Great advice though

I used a combination of Lanolin ( the one with sheep wool )..bepanthan and nipple shields.

It's amazing what we put up with once we are determined to succeed.

Cracked nipples don't just happen from breastfeeding they are a sign that your baby is not attached correctly. Getting attachment right is the best thing to fix cracked nipples. While some creams and such will relieve the pain and help with healing ultimately it is getting the attachment right that heals them. ABA recommends BM at the end of a feed because of its healing properties. I personally tried lanolin with my first and didn't know that it was made from sheep wool which I am allergic to. With my second I only got a cracked nipple on one side because of a flat nipple bubs found it hard to attach and BM really helped but getting the attachment right worked much better.
Anything that you have to wipe off before bubs feeds is not good and has the potential to be very harmful so sorry but I really don't agree with this article.

Re: Avoid cracked nipples in breastfeeding......

That is a good point about the baby not attaching correctly, Phoenix.  I hadn't covered that.

If Breastmilk worked well for you, then that is great.  I just found that my nipples needed more moisture than just breastmilk and breastmilk alone couldn't fix the cracks before the next feed.  And even when baby did latch on, because the cracks are already there, it was very painful.  Wiping it off wasn't a problem for me.

I'm glad you raised your points though - I didn't know that lanolin was made from sheep wool either and used it as well.

Re: Avoid cracked nipples in breastfeeding......
I did something that was taught when my grandmother breastfed and that is toughening up the nipples before birth, while pregnant every shower I would scrub my nipples with a soft bristled nail brush, I had no problems with cracked or sore nipples, my third pregnancy I didn't do it and I paid for it and gave up feeding after a week....  Great advice x
