Keep the milk flowing

Bex17 by Bex17 Speaking(June 2007) (rank 500+)

If your anything like me, being able to breastfeed was one of the most important lessons I wanted to learn when my baby was born. Please don’t get me wrong, I realise many mums cant and I believe there is absolutely nothing wrong with feeding your baby formular.

I just wanted to give you my advice on keeping the milk supply flowing well.

Naturally, eating well and getting lots of rest are the basics and play the biggest part but I found water to be the key.  I drink buckets of it. There have been times when I have fell behind in drinking and found it hard to keep my baby full. Both breasts would empty in one feed and he would be hungry for more.  It’s those times that I made a conscience effort to increase my water intake and the milk would increase.

The best way I find to make sure I drank is to keep a large glass at the kitchen sink. I drink at least one when he is due for a feed and also when he has had his feed.

I’m now coming up to my fifth month of feeding and feel that the water was the reason it has been a success. Please give it a go and if it doesn’t work for you, you have lost nothing but a little extra supply in toilet paper!

Great advice Bex

I fed my last 2 kids till about 5-6 mths. I would have loved to feed them both for longer, but as I'm not a keen water drinker my supply went down. A great tip for breastfeeding mothers out there.

Totally agree!  H2O is key.  You can't make enough milk if you haven't got enough H2O circulating in your body.  Every time I sat down for a feed, I made sure I had a glass of H2O with me.  I also monitored my caffeine intake, and other things that can be dehydrating.  Harrison is 16 months and we are still going strong!

Well done.

Great advice.  I found a glass of water when you gave a feed was generally a good rule to follow.

Great advice!
You are so right. Whenever I think my supply is starting to decrease the first thing I do is grab a glass of water. Natalya is nearly 6 months old and one of the only 10% of Australian babies that is exclusively breastfed until 6 months. Australia falls below the world average in this. Sad really!

That's right...lots of fluids for yourself ( preferrably water )

and a good diet......but also...adequate REST.

Leave the housework alone....no stress is best
