Balancing work and kids: It's even harder than it looks

Kristen by Kristen Young Parent(June 2007) (rank 58th)

I'm a stay at home/work at home mom of two boys.  Starting my own business a couple of years ago seemed like a good idea but I never imagined how difficult it would become going from one child and a business to two children and a business.  Before I

lost my mind, I decided to try out a few things to help juggle everything that my life requires these days.

  • Make good use of your time.  If you have children that nap or go to school, don't let that time slip away from you.  It only took me 4 months but I figured out how to get my boys to take a nap at the same time.  As soon as they are down, I'm off to my workshop to get stuff done.
  • Don't neglect your family.  This is easier said than done.  Sometimes you just have a deadline and everyone need to pitch in (or hang in) until the task is complete.  That may be a tough one to explain to an infant, but Nathan and I have taken to having long singing sessions when I just can't hold him and he needs a little loving.  On the flip side, when your task is done, give your children your undivided attention.  And boy do they know the difference between distracted and complete attention.  If you are distracted, any time you spend with your kids won't count to them.
  • Ask for help.  Tonight I was working on printing up 80 shirts for my father-in-laws 70th birthday party this weekend. As is always the case, the kids were cranky and things kept going wrong.  My husband stepped up to the plate and carried both boys around for 2 hours.  Thank heavens because I never would have gotten done without his help.  It's all about teamwork.

These are just a couple of ideas on balancing work and kids.  What do you do to make it all come together?

Re: Balancing work and kids: It's even harder than it looks
Lots of people who start small businesses do so because they are tire with 9 to 5, they want to spend more time with their families, want to have enough time to go on vacations and are tires of their bosses.  Just realize that you are exchanging one boss for many clients or customers who are  more demanding than bosses and are always right, you have to spend more than 8 hours per day at the job more like 5 to 9, you never have time for vacation otherwise who will run the business and you find it very difficult devoting extra time to the family.  This is also true if it is a home based business.

Think it through very clearly before you jump in.
