Mum...What is going on with me...How I talked about puberty with my girls...

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(June 2007) (rank 7th)
Well whether we like it or not our lovely little girls will all hit puberty one day...The little girl as we know them will blossom into a lovely young lady and nothing we can do to stop it...As much as we want them to stay small they just don't...So I thought I would write an article about the things I talked to my girls about before they hit puberty...

Sexuality is a conditon...It affects the way they look, act and feel...Your child needs to know about and understand these changes to make it easier for them to cope...Girls change alot and do so at different rates....Tiana hit puberty long before Michaela and Michaela is 1 year older...So both of them seemed to hit it at the same time if that makes sense...

I  sat my girls down and explained to them the physical changes and the feelings they might get when they started to go through the transistion from a girl to a woman...

First I explained to them that their breasts would grow...Michaela was a little concerned that she had breast cancer as hers were sore and one seemed to have a lump in it and the other didn't..So off to the doctor we went and she told her it was completely normal...I then told them that their hips would get wider and they would lose that straight up and down shape they had...Tiana was excited as it meant she would have hips to hold up her hipsters instead of a belt LOL...Puberty I told them also meant weight gain and growing taller so not to panic if they put a little weight on and then shot up a bit taller...I then went on to tell them that they would start to grow hairs under their arms and on their genitals...That sparked a giggle from them both and then asking me if they could shave under their arms like I did...LOL...Then I explained the period to them and what would happen and why...This seemed to gross them out but they really needed to know...I then told them sometimes when girls and boys hit puberty the change in hormones can bring on pimples...Fingers crossed this has not happened to either of my girls and we used this as a stepping stone to start a skin cleaning regime....I then explained ovulation to them and the reason this happened and what it was for...

I went on to tell the girls about the emotional changes they might feel to...I explained to them that they will start to think boys look good and have feelings about them...I also went on to explain that alot of girl when they are in puberty find girls attractive...This does not mean you are bi-sexual or a lesbian affection is fairly common between women...Alot of boys and girls during puberty can be attracted to the opposite sex it does not make them  Homosexual...

This is just a short break down of the things I talked to the girls about and I thought I would share them with you all...Of course there was questions asked from the girls and I answered them truthfully and honestly...They need to be prepared for the changes that they are going to experience with their bodies...And in their feelings also...I just wanted to make sure they were ready for this all...At the end of our converstion I told them that no matter what at all they can come to me with anything...No matter how silly they think the question is they need to ask...Communication is the key to this I think and both my girls have come to me on different occasions about things and I have kept the lines of communication open so far...So fingers crossed...

Just wanted to share with you all...
Have a great day
Cheers
Angie
