Potty Training

Mystique by Mystique Speaking(June 2007) (rank 500+)
Klaudia (my 4 year old) was 10 months old when she started taking her own nappies off. She had a bad habit of playing with the "contents".

My partner Jake and I decided at the time to start taping up her nappies so she couldn't take
them off in the middle of the night anymore. This didn't last long once she figured out how to find the start of the tape and unwind it. We were at our wits end especially after many of these episodes happened while we were out!

I read up about Potty Training online and asked advice from the parents on my parenting website. Many of them had different ideas on how to do it and we soon became very confused. As a first time mum, I decided to go with my gut instinct and we went out and bought a potty.

The potty was a tad on the expensive side yet very very helpful. It was shaped like a toilet with its own removable bowl for cleaning and had side drawers to put books and toys in.

We sat Klaudia on it and filled one side with Grapes (her favourite snack) and the other with her favourite books and toys. I sat down on the floor with her and read her book to her while she munched on her grapes and sat on the potty.

Within 15 minutes she had done her very first wee and poo. We got excited and made her get excited also. From that moment on, potty training was smooth sailing. She loved it when we gave her the praise and thought it was a big game.

It wasn't long before we had her convinced her she was big enough to use a step to sit on the big toilet while I held her and made up stories with her. She loved wearing the underwear we bought her because they had gorgeous pictures on the front of them.

My second child Natalia was different however. It wasn't a case of the "nappy comes off and lets play with the contents". Natalia learned the words "poof" and "wee wee" and before long she was wanting to sit on the potty next to Klaudia whenever Klaudia had to use the toilet.

She wasn't as easy to train as Klaudia though. Natalia has a short attention span and no amount of story telling or game playing could keep her sitting on the potty long enough. The praise only lasts a little while before she gets bored and wants to go play again.

Although Natalia isn't fully trained yet, we are getting there. She is only 1 and a half so we still have a while to go yet.

My point here though is, every child is different. Don't try and let anyone tell you that your child is too young for toilet training or too old to be still in nappies. Children will train when THEY are ready to, not when you are.

There are 100s of different techniques to potty training and you have to do what works best for you and your child. What works for one family or one child does not always work for another.

My story above is just an idea of how we did it. Hopefully it might work for you too. Good luck in your potty training journey!

Re: Potty Training
Great article, all my 3 kids have been different, my first was soooo slow but when it happened that was it and he never looked back, with my second she was young and had no problem with her at all, now with my 3rd he will not have anything to do with the potty he acts like its an evil entity lol but he is only young so we have time.... but with all I have never pushed it, encouraged yes.... Also as you said when it finally did happen you made a big deal about it, we actually had a first poo party with all his toy friends (saw it on Dr Phil) lol that helped x
