Persistant Cough

Mandy460 by Mandy460 Talking(June 2007) (rank 336th)
Hi Everyone, I received this bit of triva by email from a friend who tried it and swears by it. Just though it may help someone.
To stop nighttime coughing in a child (or adult as we found out personally), put Vicks Vaporub generously on the bottom of the feet at bedtime, then cover with socks.
Even persistent, heavy, deep coughing will stop in about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief.
Works 100% of the time and is more effective in children than even very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly.
I heard the head of the Canada Research Council describe these findings on the part of their scientists when they were investigating the effectiveness and usage of prescription cough medicines in children as compared to alternative therapies like accupressure. Just happened to tune in A.M. Radio and picked up this guy talking about why cough medicines in kids often do more harm than good due to the chemical makeup of these strong drugs so, I listened. It was a surprising finding and found to be more effective than prescribed medicines for children at bedtime, in addition to have a soothing and calming effect on sick children who then went on to sleep soundly.
Lolly tried it on herself when she had a very deep constant and persistent cough a few weeks ago and it worked 100%! She said that it felt like a warm blanket had enveloped her, coughing stopped in a few minutes and believe me, this was a deep, ( incredibly annoying!) every few seconds uncontrollable cough, and she slept cough-free for hours every night that she used it.
So, please pass it on. If you end up sick, try it yourself and you will be absolutely amazed by the effect. I hope it helps someone! Have a good day.. Mandy xxx

Re: Persistant Cough
I will try this when needed, tho with DD1 the asthma inhaler worked pretty well! Still, menthol sounds a bit more "natural"! I have a menthol stick (4head) for my headaches and it works great & is ok for pregnancy and for kids to use. Is menthol a wonder medicine?

Re: Persistant Cough

I have used this on all my kids, but it does not work for me and never has done. But I had whooping cough as a child and now whenever I do get a nagging cough, I tend to wake the neighbours (and I live on a double block with the house in the middle).

But on the kids it is fantastic. So is having cold water next to the bed to drink when they start to cough. At no other time do they have water, only at flu season when they are sick.

I have a terrible cough at the moment that woke me up twice last night and I have lost my voice because of it so will do this tonight. I put heaps on my chest each night and where I can reach on my back but never tried this. Great advice.

What an interesting idea... I definitely must try it one of these days... The family will probably think I've gone crazy, but hey any dock will do in a storm - RIGHT!
