Advanced Toddlers...Do you think your toddler is Gifted?

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(June 2007) (rank 3rd)
All kids are clever...But have you ever wondered if your clever little one is actually gifted?  Do you think that your child does things that are a bit more out of the norm for a toddler of their age?

All kids develop at different rates...But sometimes a toddler displays signs that are really very advanced for thier age bracket...Sometimes If your second or third child is gifted then you will notice that he/she is more advanced than your other children and displays signs of being gifted...It is very easy for a first time parent to miss the signs that their child might be gifted but...So until they get to school this might not be picked up...Some parents even think maybe their child is different to others just that little more clever but they shy away from it for the fear of looking like a bragging parent...This should never be the case but...

So have you ever wondered what to look for in a potentially gifted toddler? Well I am going to tell you some things that are sometimes seen as gifted...

A very high level of curiosity is a sign to look for in a gifted child...There is also early developement in three areas that are usually a very good sign also...

  • Motor skills...Can your toddler do large and small motor skill tasks? Like catch and throw a ball at an early age..Swing a cricket bat and hit the ball really early...Or even do puzzles intended for an older age bracket and complete them...
  • Quantities...Does your child have a really large vocabulary...Can he/she absorb knowledge quickly...Do they have an attention span that shocks you...Or even come out with long and complex sentences...
  • Comparisons...I know we always say do not compare but this is a different kind of comparing...When your child plays with toys does he/she find more ways to use thier toys...Or the way they approach things is imaginative and different to other kids their own age...Do they think up creative solutions to a problem...Do they show a deeper understanding of questions you ask them or answers they are given from adults...

These are the three main areas that a chid shows that they are different to other toddlers...Gifted...

If your child can sit through you reading a long book and want you to read it again, Talks early and shows an early interest in the alphabet, Understands numbers and time, Can compensate for a handicap..they can adjust and still function inspite of a handicap they have...These are just a few things from this site here where I found these things...

I have gotten this information from the parenthood.com website so if you are interested then check out the link for more information...

I will finish this article on this note...If you think your child is gifted it is really important that you support them and guide them to their full potential...

Just wanted to share this information with you all...
Have a great day
Cheers
Angie

Thanks! Great article, I think that as busy parents, we often overlook the fact that we have some very amazing children! Particularly a first child as you have no comparisons to make!

Re: Advanced Toddlers...Do you think your toddler is Gifted?

Mac kenzie is only nine mnths but right from the beginning he showed signs of being advanced to my horror my boyfreind placed him on his belly at two weeks to my great suprise he pushed himself up, he was my baby he sould'nt be doing that pick him up!!,  then the midwife visited he looked right at the doorway as she was entering and followed her across the room they say they can't see at this age but she said he could with out a doubt!! I was expecting so much so early and his developement since I thought had been on cue like all the other kids he had his 8mnth review the other week they again seem to think he is advanced his motor skills and co-ordination are ace, he suiporises me daily even a few weeks ago while dressing him i had him stood for a second he took his hand out of mine and did three steps, now we think from now on stuff satistic's he;s ok not struggling so let him be I just have to remember that and not hold him back on the say so of other peoples experience.

Great advice as always mwah jo xxx going to check links now thanks for sharing xxx

Well, we have a bright little button, who is very well co-ordinated... I am not sure if he is gifted, however it is good to know the signs - just in case!  I do think that a lot of kids are far more capable than we were at their age, as they have access to far more information, and so do their parents.

Re: Advanced Toddlers...Do you think your toddler is Gifted?
Hi
We think Jalan is gifted.  We sat and did a craft activity after taking her to the park and she sat and helped totally engrossed.  We picked up leaves and other stuff at the park to do a story on he visit to the park
I asked her where she wanted to put stuff and she then  put it where she wanted. I did the gluing obviously
This activity lasted for nearly 45 minutes and then she still seemed interested so we got out pens and paper and she scribbled for a while then coloured in her coulouring book (if you call scribble colouring at this age)
All up we held her attention for nearly 2 hours with no breaks.  To me this is a huge attention span for a 19 month old.
She also has a huge vocabulary and understands what you tell her  and does it including often 2 instructions at once.
Although i think i need to video this for proof as as soon as we leave the house she is lucky to say 2-3 words lol
This may be normal I don't know
She also got the child lock of the cupboard door lol....
Luv Deb

Re: Advanced Toddlers...Do you think your toddler is Gifted?
My brother thought is first child was gifted and she is in some ways, but they missed the signs of my nephew, I always have thought he was an unusual child not very good with social skills when at pre-school instead of going outside at playtime he would sit inside with a book.  It wasn't until the pre-school questioned my brother about a book my nephew was reading they wanted to know if they had read the book to him at home, no they hadn't he was nearly 4 and was reading this book from front to end by himself.... They had him tested and sure enough this little man is very gifted luckily they did find out intime and he is now thriving. A gifted child needs extra brain stimulation or they get lost at, he now at 51/2 is reading Harry Potter books and goes to a school that has classes especially for gifted children.   Great article Angie x
