Travelling with children

stuterri by stuterri Speaking(June 2007) (rank 500+)

We recently went on holidays and realised i had nothing for the kids to do as it was a long drive. I quickly learnt that it is harder on them than on the driver. My advice would be to    BE PREPARED.

If you want to travel cheaply take food with you eg, Sandwiches, Biscuits, Fruit etc and lots of it, also drinks whether it be cordial, juice or water. Having a few drink bottles for each child also makes a difference as you aren't stopping so often to refill.

Have different activities for them to do some ideas are -  colouring books and pencils, movies (if you have a dvd system), books to read, even school work that they will be missing out on..

Another wouold be to play sight games eg eye spy, how many different colour cars on a long stretch of road or for the young ones try spot the animal and change to another one when they get to 10. You could also try and get them to have a sleep if they are still little but this might not work if they are excited about where they are going.

Get everything prepared the day before and freeze or put it in the fridge so you aren't rushing around they day you leave..

We drove from QLD to NSW and all of these activities kept my kids occupied for the majority of the trip.

Re: Travelling with children

Always do this for our trips, find that we usually end up taking more kids stuff for the trip than actual clothes! LOL
