Astigmatism...What is it?

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(June 2007) (rank 7th)
Well we have a family of Nine here and out of that Nine three of them wear glasses...Ken (my hubby) Aidan and Tiana...out of those three tow of them wear glasses for the same reasons...You see in grade seven when I had Aidan's eyes tested it didn't take too long beofre
the optomotrist came up with the conclusion that Aidan had an astigmatism...Same story pretty much for Tiana...But I do remember how paniced I was when I first heard the term used to describe what Aidan had...Was ready for them when they told us about Tiana lol...So I thought I would share it with you all about what it is and how it affect people with one and also what the signs can be if one is present...

Astigmatism was desribed to me when I was told about my son having one as don't panic it just means that his cornea is oval shaped instead of the spherical shape...He needs glasses but to help correct it...

It is believed amongst optometrists that over a quarter of the population has this and it is the most common one when it comes to vision problems... It causes things like blurred vision near sightedness or far sightedness also... therefore making it hard for kids with schoolwork and playing sports too...

Astigmatism is heriditary usually but can also be caused by the cornea being scarred from an eye injury and even from keratoconus which is a disease that makes the cornea thin gradually...

If an astigmatism is left untreated things like eye strain, headaches and blurred and distorted vision close and far can be a problem...

This is the reason why it is so important to keep up your regular optometrist visits for you and your children...If you want to learn more about this please check out this link here as I am not to good with all the technical terms...

Just wanted to share with you all something that has happened in our home with a couple in my family...

Have a great day
Cheers
Angie

Re: Astigmatism...What is it?

I have astigmatism myself and am basically blind as a bat!! I started wearing glasses when I was 6 and was always told that I would never be able to wear contact lenses because of my eye shape being like a rugby ball not a football-if that sounds right! Anyhow I started wearing contacts nearly 15 years ago and haven't looked back since-not without my lenses in anyway.

I had to read this, just to find out what it is!  I think that you have explained it nicely, and it is great that you provided the link for all the techno jargon too.
