Tooth decay and gum disease are caused by colonies of bacteria, this is called plaque. If plaque is not flossed or brushed away, it will produce acids that wear away the tooth enamel. Plaque will harden into tartar, which will lead to gum inflammation, or gingivitis.
Fluoride, occurring naturally in foods and water, can be a powerful tool for fighting tooth decay. The first good practice is to eat healthy during pregnancy. Eat plenty of calcium and get plenty of vitamin D, vitamin D helps absorb calcium.
Fluoride in the first few years of life can help prevent cavities. Besides calcium and fluoride, phosphorus and magnesium are minerals that are needed for the formation of tooth enamel. Vitamin A also helps in building strong bones and teeth.
Children are vulnerable to tooth decay, here are some important tips to remember in helping to avoid tooth decay in children;
n Eat a healthy diet
n Assist children in teeth brushing until they are old enough to do it themselves
n Brush twice daily, supervise
n Never put babies to bed with bottles
n Never dip dummies in honey
Even though sugary foods are the main offenders, starchy foods also play an active role in tooth decay. Apples are known as nature’s toothbrush because they stimulate saliva flow. Saliva lowers mouth acidity and washes away food particles. A constantly dry mouth can also play a strong part in tooth decay.
Help your teeth with foods that do not promote cavities, these hints may help in preventing them;
n Chew sugarless gum, it stimulates saliva flow
n Rinse your mouth and brush your teeth after food
n Avoid diet drinks they may have no sugar BUT they are very high in acid which can cause erosion of tooth enamel
n Sports drinks are also very acidic and very damaging
More teeth are lost through gum disease then tooth decay. Gum disease strikes anyone who neglects oral hygiene or eats a poor diet. Regular brushing and flossing will help in the prevention of sore and inflamed gums.
Gingivitis causes the gums to redden, swell and bleed. Treatment requires good dental hygiene and the removal of plaque. Left untreated it can lead to periodontitis; this is an advanced infection of the gums that causes teeth to loosen and fall out.
Bleeding gums may also be a sign that your intake of vitamin C is low. Make sure you eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. Munching on hard, fibrous foods stimulates the gums.
