Maximum Minti 3 - Writing Quality Advice

Anonymous Author (June 2007)
An appropriate Title:
When selecting your title, try to create one that reflects the actual content of your advice...
When people do a search on a topic, or see your advice in the advice list, they will be expecting your title to be expanded on in your
advice.  Think of the base topic, then add a little enhancement to provide more detail to your title.  This will indicate whether or not it is going to be of interest, or helpful to a potential reader.  Having a sensational title to get attention, or a misleading title is actually quite annoying, and it can result in a low vote, as it isn't what the reader was expecting at all.  I try hard to keep my own titles short and simple, yet explanatory.  Feel free to point out if I am not conveying the topic of my advice very well in my titles, as I would appreciate the feedback.

Choosing a suitable topic:

Many great advice topics can be sourced by reading Q & A, member’s blogs, group blogs and comments.
This has shown me what things people might be interested in, and if I feel passionate about that topic, or have experience in that area – I write something that I hope other people will find helpful and interesting.  I personally try to write in a way that encourages people to comment and add more information that will enhance my advice posts - this is one of Minti's great features.  You may choose to write about life experiences that you have had, subjects that are important to you, or things that are topical at the time.  Check to see if there is already advice on your topic on Minti.  If there is, read it first, and if you feel you have more helpful information, or a different point of view about that subject, then post it.

Why write advice?:
There are many good reasons to write advice - if you are doing so just to increase your rankings, you could be disappointed.
It is a combination of participation throughout Minti that will increase your rankings.  Members are often disappointed when they post a lot of advice that doesn't get read, or ranked very highly - think quality, not quantity.  You may deserve 5 stars for making the effort - your actual advice may not be worthy of 5 stars... Individual readers may measure quality on things like the accuracy (if applicable); the readability (which includes the layout and language); originality (writing in your own words, not cutting and pasting from other sources); tried and true (writing from your own experience, or that of someone you know); how helpful it is (to genuinely help one person is great); providing actual advice (a solution, a clear resolution, some tips, or moral to your article).  It pays to keep this in mind as you are writing and editing your advice post, think about your target audience, and how you want your advice to help them.

Before you write your advice:
(This is actually from the page that you write advice on - it is written by the site administrators)

When you click on 'write advice' on the green bar, take the time to read and fully comprehend the information that is provided on the page BEFORE you write or post your advice to avoid disappointment.  These include the following titles, with links, they are written by the sites administrators, and these are the guidelines that they want us all to follow - especially the copyright rules.
  • Your article must be parenting advice. Will your advice help parents be better parents? See examples here.
  • Please remember to respect copyright rules. If you are using someone else's content then ensure you have their permission and that you reference the original source.
  • How much should I write? It's up to you, however 50 words (approximately 5 lines) is generally considered the minimum.
  • What advice should I write? It's up to you, however you may like to see what people are requesting here. If you are still stuck maybe write advice on the following topics... pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, babies, early childhood, schooling, tweens, teenage years and beyond.
  • Your article must not breach Minti's Terms of Service or our Code of Honor.
  • If you are wanting to post a question, you are in the wrong area. You need to go to Q&A.
If you are unsure about whether your advice is breaching any conditions above, how to cite and give credit to your sources, add appropriate links and information - ask someone else, or read all the advice on Minti Basics and advice about Writing Advice first - type the topic into the search bar above and take your pick, there are many great articles on these subjects already.

Writing advice is rewarding:

1.       Publishing Advice/Articles
You are sharing information, experiences, research, opinions, solutions, and ideas that you are passionate about, and that could potentially help others; now, and in the future.  Even if you only help one person, you are helping to improve someone’s life – how great is that!

2.       Reading and Responding to Comments
Receiving responses from readers in the comments section is a great experience.  Whether or not readers agree with you, it’s an opportunity to ‘meet’ new people online that also find the subject interesting.  This is a great way to grow as a person, learn more about your topic, and even challenge your current views.

3.       When Publishing Advice/Articles
Readers vote on your advice, to give a ranking as an indication to other readers, how helpful, well presented, or accurate they found your advice to be.  This means that in future, readers searching for information on this subject will know how highly it is regarded.  If you aren’t happy with your ranking – on a particular piece of advice – think about ways, or ask someone else about ways that it can be improved.

Even more ways that publishing advice can be rewarding:

  • You get to air your views, research topics, practice presenting them, improve your language skills, and computer skills.
  • If you tend to have a more timid personality, it can help you with your own confidence and self esteem – each completed project is an achievement.
  • When writing in regard to an experience that you went through, it can help you to feel better by sharing it with other people - it will help people get to know you better as well.
Remember, that feedback you receive is about the topic that you have chosen to write, and the overall finished presentation of that subject, not about you.  Ask someone you trust to help you before you publish your advice if this concerns you.  If you think your feedback could be better, then get back in with the edit button, there is always room for all of us to improve, and no limit on how many changes you make to your advice. (For the record, this is my 3rd edit for this advice - so far).

Let's help to keep Minti the number one 'parent-o-pedia' site, and provide original, helpful, informative, clear advice that helps other parents, parents to be, and grandparents.  Minti is all about the members, Vibe Capital have brought so many more dimensions to this site, it is so much more than your average parenting forum - let's use it wisely.
Any contributed content above is the subjective opinion of that member or external author, and not of Minti.com Pty Ltd. If you are searching for health related advice we strongly suggest you seek professional medical support. View our Terms of Service for more details.

Re: Maximum Minti 3 - Writing Quality Advice

Good advice here but I have to agree with another member that this site is for parents giving advice not everyone has the skills in english or good grammer I believe good advice is exactly that it doesn't matter if you have made a spelling mistake or even how you have set your article out after all we all can't be authors or English teachers. I find that sometimes these lengthy advice articles are just that and if you sift through it's content that alot of the information  can simply be said with less words. We also must remember that we all come from different backrounds and different countries and how someone may explain a subject in one country is not necessarily how it is done in another country. I also feel this deters other members from writing articles which to me is not what this site is about. If you are researching subjects well it's not really your experience as a parent .

Re: Maximum Minti 3 - Writing Quality Advice

Many people don't have great skills in english or grammar... I barely have a grasp of grammer myself and my friends often get a giggle at my expense when I write articles.  I write using word so that I can spell and grammar check; most people have this program on their computers and those that don't can download free open source programs that do the same; or upload to an online checker.

I use my own experience as a parent, my life experience and from areas that I have worked in to write my articles; I like to link to more detailed information when possible to illustrate my point & further validate my opinion.  I usually search for these links after I have written my postings to assist those who wish to do further research on the topic for themselves.

It does not seem that many people are deterred from writing articles; as you can see the standard and size of postings varies greatly on the site; which is why the voting system is there, highly rated articles are the first listed when someone searches a topic.  These ratings are averaged out by votes made from other readers & participants on the site.

The sole reason that I have written this series of articles is so that people have the tools to improve their rating if they are unhappy with the response their advice receives.  Many times people have valid points, however they present them poorly & they remain unread because people can' be bothered reading them.  You can tell that they are disappointed by the feedback that they recieve; however most of the feedback on this site is productive & helpful; it is a persons individual choice to take it on board & be grateful, or to be offended & gain nothing.  I think everyone should read Minti's Editorial Guidelines & Writing Advice That Will Benefit Us All before they post an advice article.

Every member can go back & edit their article as many times as they like; the majority of mine have been deleted, re-written, updated & reposted on many occasions.  The first time was because people went through them & voted them down as a personal vendetta, (not recommended as admin can tell when this happens), the rest have been because I wanted to improve the readability & content.

Re: Maximum Minti 3 - Writing Quality Advice

LOL thanks, one of my friends said my writing is terrible, (in regards to 'correct' use of english).  However, it is pretty easy to tell what the topic will be about by my advice titles... That is one thing that I find really important... If the author isn't clear about their chosen subject, then how is anyone else meant to be?

Re: Maximum Minti 3 - Writing Quality Advice

Great Advise Lui. I think lately some of the advice i've seen on MINTI i dont think is actually advice but more of an answer to a question. I didnt realise that the min requirement was only 5 lines or 50 words. I think it should be increase. I see advices to be more of at least a page than only a few lines. No offence to anyone but when i see people copy questions (from Q & A) and paste it in an advice article to give there answer and say its advice but it is only one short paragraph or a couple of sentences, then it isnt really advice. That is my opinion.

RE: It's only "Advice" if it's lengthy!

What nonsense!  That's what is so disappointing about Minti - moderators are so crititcal.  We are MOTHERS....NOT AUTHORS!!!!

If you asked your mother-in-law for some advice and she gave you HER advice in just a sentence or twoo...It's still her advice!!!  Regardless of your opinion on it.

Advice is advice...whether you think it is lengthy or not....moderators ruin the esperience for many who feel their advice is not even worthy of being published if it is not "lengthy" enough.

If you want lengthy accurate advice - buy a book or see a doctor.

If you want genuine advice form other mothers - then be prepared to let them share what they know.

Besides, mothers are busy and don't always have the time for backing up their advice with detailed research..they just know it worked for them!

If Minti is a so-called "community of parents" then this should be recognised as one to help one another - not a "community of parents who are good writers that attract readers and thus advertisers!"

Also - some parents may only speak a little bit of english and be limited in that regard to how much they can share adequately.  That doesn't make it any less advice either.

Re: RE: It's only

I am not sure who you are quoting... I didn't write that and unless you have taken Jo's comment out of context, she didn't write that either... As for whether Mothers are authors or not; an author writes yes?  Posting/publishing advice on a public forum then makes said person an author does it not?

Usually when asking someone you know for advice verbally on a one on one basis, you would have lower expectations of the expertise of that advice than you would if the person were addressing potentially millions of people.

What constitutes good parenting advice is really up to the parent reading the advice.  I really wouldn't suggest that buying a book would be more accurate than reading something online.  However, I do suggest that perhaps posting inaccurate advice - whether you are a mother or not - really is irresponsible.  People who post facts and figures that they claim is based on research really should validate them by quoting their sources, which of course also gives credit to the original author.

PS - Personally I prefer to read intelligent, well thought out, substantiated information, I think that parents are more than capable of providing advice that meets that criteria.

Re: Maximum Minti 3 - Writing Quality Advice

Thanks Jo, I actually wrote this to help people who get upset because their advice postings receive low votes... There are some advice postings that people have taken time on and poured their heart and soul into.  They have written about topics that they have a lot of knowledge or experience in.  There are others who have written about topics that they feel passionate about and they have linked to the sources of their research to both validate it and give their claims credit.  I agree, far too many comments are making it through to the advice section; there are plenty of great articles about how to write and present information... Hopefully this one helps someone too.

Thank you, good read.   I've written a few pieces but i think some of us have more of a gift for writing than others!  I did most of what you suggested here but maybe i could edit them one day though.

I really like what you said here    "Remember, that feedback you receive is about the topic that you have chosen to write, and the overall finished presentation of that subject, not about you. "    I think, especially when a newbie, we can really take any critism to heart and as a personal attack when it just isn't - afterall do these people know you?

Cheers Julie

Re: Maximum Minti 3 - Writing Quality Advice

Hey DW, thanks heaps for the feedback!

I had forgotten this advice was so long, might be time for an edit.  I think it is really important for people to remember that if they choose to put their opinion/experience/advice out there, they must be willing to accept that not everyone will necessarily agree with it.  There may be the added bonus of those who can concur and expand on the information you provide, and most important of you, you might help someone ; )

Excellent advice, i didn't join Minti for the ratings, i joined in the hope of winning a vaccuum cleaner HaHa! And when i finally realised what the site was all about, i thought to myself, what can i offer this site.  As i was not a young mum (worse Luck) but a grandmother. But thinking life's experiences must count  for something, If i can help but 1 person, i'll feel good.

Kindest Regards Janice

I can't even remember why I joined... Probably the vacuum cleaner too LOL!  I think it is good to get advice from parents - not just some person.  The extra comments often do a lot to add more information, and a different point of view.  People should be able to read advice, then link to more and feel that they are being informed by real people that care just as much as they do.

Re: Writing Advice On Minti Is Rewarding
Hi
Great advice
Makes you wonder what motivates people for each piece of advice hey.
Mine I do as the mood strikes me.
Now if someone writes something that I feel is not advice then I do mark it down and also put a constructive comment (hope they see it as constructive) so that they can improve on it and edit or expand it.
It is good going back and reading some peoples advice and seeing how far they have come since their first article.
One persons was classic the other day.  Her first article had no spacing no nothing it was just words on a topic that no one would really read because of how it is written.  Her latest one was so fantastic where she had taken on the criticism and grown so much.
We need to put constructive criticism for improving all our articles so that we can all grow rather than focusing on opinions.
Rather than jsut saying great article etc offer suggestions for improvement as well and why

Re: Writing Advice On Minti Is Rewarding
Yes, well I' ve had a bit of constructive criticism, and I welcome more.  I really am starting to get the whole idea of a parenting website for parents...  I have unsubscribed from a pile of the sites I signed up to when I was preggo...  Like it is great to get those wee news letters, however they are very vague, and I can do my own research and I trust my own instincts and the experience of a collective group of 'real time' and experienced parents much more than some automated drivel that is sent out impersonally on a regular basis.  Like I know they have forums, and all that jazz, however, even they seem impersonal and sort of 'controlled'.  Also, perhaps I am impatient, I find them very slow and boring to use as well.  Minti isn't super fast, however there are so many people providing feedback, comments, blogs and advice all the time, there is always something interesting going on.

Re: Writing Advice On Minti Is Rewarding
Hi
What is more the shame is when people judge you by where you are on the rankings.
Each person writes articles for their own reason and not always to climb in rankings but sometimes as a personal goal to get somewhere and to heal.  Whether it to be gold or to get pretty medals they are all a achievement and we should be proud that someone has given themselves to Minti rather than trying to knock them down
What i find a shame is as soon as anyone gets near the top some members stop voting and commenting on their articles as they feel they no longer need the encouragement.
We want Minti to be a positive place so  think before you decide not to vote or comment as well
Encourage ALL to be positive and not snub them if they are down
Just my thoughts
Luv Deb

Re: Writing Advice On Minti Is Rewarding
Yes, it is odd that someone can take the time to read advice, then not even vote...???  Like what is with that, you don't even need to be a member.  Then again, I don't vote if it isn't advice anymore - like if it is a question or something.  I leave an encouraging comment though (well I hope they are encouraging comments).

I think that the best way to practice advice is to gain confidence by writing comments.  Then you are getting amongst it a bit, and the advice just follows...  You suddenly think oh - people are interested in this topic, I think I can add information that can help people.  Then all these nice people, like yourself write lovely comments, and you all get to know each other YAY, as Jaydee would say.

Re: Writing Advice On Minti Is Rewarding
It is a shame, and while I think everyone should try to participate by voting and commenting on articles - it is also their choice NOT to vote as well... Like sometimes, I really can't vote, as I don't think something is original, or I truly make no sense of it - luckily that is less often now.  Gosh, maybe none of mine makes sense and I am getting sympathy votes - like who cares really??!!    As long as somewhere along the line, someone learns something that makes their life easier, or their child's happier and safer.

Cheers Lui

Excellent article Lui!  I love reading & writing advice in Minti. My latest piece of advice attracted a great question which helped me add something extra to my article. I love hearing feedback from people! I've written a lot of my articles from experiences I've been through, so its great being able to relate to people who've been through similar things, or even just hearing someone else's views on the topic. And yes if you can touch at least one person with what you write, its well worth it. Well done, Kylie

Yes, I saw that, and I am glad that you responded like that, it is good that we can go back and edit our advice - it sort of makes it interactive, which is far better for everyone.  Do you know, there are quite a few topics that you can google now, and minti advice is right up there on the first page - woohoo.  That is another reason for us to keep up the standard, and keep writing more - there are a lot of other people who read it too.

I really enjoyed reading those 3 - it sort of gave me the idea to do a series on being role models - rather than trying to jam a whole lot into one massive advice article.  I like to scan for new advice now and then, or jump on to someone's profile page and read their advice while I have a cuppa.  I am going to make bookmarks for all the ones I like the best soon - so when I am stuck, or someone needs to know something - I can send them the link, quick as a flash and seem really clever.

Re: Writing Advice On Minti Is Rewarding
Thanks Jo, it is fun to sit down and snuggle in bed with a hot choccy and marshmallows in the evening and read the latest advice.  Or click on someone interesting and read all their advice.  Beats those silly magazines with made up stories about people we don't even know.  Keep writing yourself too!

Your first advice was really good too - I loved it, and I see you have edited it to make it even better - well done!  It is fun isn't, especially when you can write about something that can help the rest of us.

Re: Writing Advice On Minti Is Rewarding

You're right I did edit it.......lol.....I went back after a while and it was like.......wow, I could have done that so much better, so I did!!  I'm much happier with it now......it pays to read other members advice and learn how to word it and space it.

Thanks Lui!!

Re: Writing Advice On Minti Is Rewarding
Well written Lui...I I have written a couple of articles that I thought might just be a little too contraversial so I sent them to a trusted Minti member to ask first hehehe...wonder who that was LOL....Great idea to write this I think it is a reward to move through the ranks for yourself as you can see that your advice is helping someone BUT on saying that I think sharing your opinions and thoughts with people is a bigger reward....I look at it that when I first joined Minti there was not alot of advice for parents with teens and If I could help one person to go through what I have just once then it was worth the time to write it for me....

Re: Writing Advice On Minti Is Rewarding
Well, I hope it encourages more people to give it a try.  I held off for ages (lucky for everyone hahaha), because I wanted to read all of the advice about writing advice first.  I also wanted to get a feel for what information was already on the site, and what information I thought was important in our daily lives - yet not widely published.  I also felt inspired by certain persons that seem to have advice coming out their ears (like yeah, we all know who that is).

I am loving all the teenage advice - I am also loving that I am not there yet!

Re: Writing Advice On Minti Is Rewarding
I can tell you enjoy what you write, and it shows, I think you can feel that when you read the advice.  I think that your advice is always so good and sensible, we are aware of it, however the pieces you write add that little bit of extra information, and reasoning that we might not think about every day.

I agree.  This piece is a good example for sure.  Well written!  Makes me want to write that advice I have been thinking of for weeks but haven't found the time to do it.  Thanks Lui!

Yeah tell me about it - I usually don't have anything I am interested in - however I thought that people might find this helpful - so I did it.
