thyroids.

emmie by emmie Talking Back(June 2007) (rank 31st)

Over active thyroid

An over active thyroid is also known as hyperthyroidism .

This means having an over active thyroid gland. It results in an exess of the thyroid hormones, which speeds up your own body functions.

Symptoms

Restlessneess , anxiety and weight loss

Need

medication to treat.

Under active thyroid

under active thyroid is also known as hypothyroidism . This occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. This tends to slow down the body functions .

symptoms

Tiredness , constipation and sensitive to the coldness.

medication is needed.

All of the above dont really sound much to worry about but it is my dad has this and when his thyroid is over active he constantly eats and gets really big and lazzy and struggles to get up and it is upsetting to see.

When his thyroid is under active he does not feel like eating but has lots of energy and can get around easier than when it is overacive but it is mostly overactive and this has caused him to have 2 heart attacks .

Thanks .

Re: thyroids.
I suffered from Graves Disease after the birth of my first child. It was awful. I would just eat and never put on weight and have very little energy.

Hi emmie

Three people in my family have thyroid problems and all have different symptoms, my sister inlaw has hashimoto's and has the goiters my mum has the opposite it is good to get this out there for people, they might just feel run down and not get help.

Re: thyroids.
I have a friend with hyperthyroidism, she is always on the go, and seems to be eating 24hrs a day.  It must be scary for your dad, I hope that they can maintain the right balance with his medication.
