 |
Anonymous Author (June 2007) |
|
Hi there, i thought id write a breif article on the new rules towards Victorian L & P platers, hopefully letting all parents out there what to be aware of once your child has passed the test.
As of the 1st of July 2007, laws are going to change...
For Learners:
- Learners under the age of 21 applying for a Probationary license, MUST have obtained their Learners permit for 12months.
- Before applying for a probationary license, Learners MUST have 120 hours of driving experience in their log books including 10 hours of driving during the night with a superviser.
- Learners are not allowed to use a mobile phone in any way at all, that includes, hands free, messaging ect..
- Learners must carry their permit with them whenever they drive. Not doing so can result in a suspension/fine.
- For learners aged 21 and over, but under 25, the same rules apply except they only have to stay on their learner permit for at least six months.
- Learners 25 and over, will only have to hold their learner permit for three months.
- Learners over 21 are not required to complete 120 hours of supervised driving or an official logbook.
- New probationary drivers now have 4 years before getting their full license: 1 year on P1, 3 years on P2.
- P1 - all mobile phone use is banned (including hands free), towing restrictions, need to have a good driving record before graduating to P2, and there is a passenger limit.
P2 -
- Drink-driving offenders will have to fit an alcohol ignition interlock for a minimum of six months when re-licensed.
- And to get full license, a satisfactory driving record is required
Learners permits are allowed at the age of 16, you can not apply for your probationary license until you are 18 and have all requirements as above....
New Vehicle restrictions:
A driver who obtains their probationary licence from 1 July 2007 will not be able to drive a vehicle that has:
- Eight or more cylinders (v8 +)
- A turbo-charged or supercharged engine (except diesel powered)
- An engine which has been modified to increase performance
- nominated as a high performance 6 cylinder car (eg. HSV Enhanced, Ford performance Vehicle,
- the BMW M and M3,
- Nissan 350Z,
- Porsche (all models), and
- Mercedes Benz SLK350.
- Penalties may include up to three demerit points and a $1,100 fine...
For Probationary drivers which obtained their P's before 1st July, the same old 'power to weight' ratio applies.
So parents who are unnaware of these new rules, please consider all of the above when going with your child to pick out a car :)

Re: NEW RULES FOR VIC 'L' & 'P' PLATERS parents MUST know!!
I totally agree with you,
I think Perth is horrible in terms of its drivers...
how hard is it to bloody merge ?
I think that if laws were a lot harder in Perth, than we wouldn't have JUST AS MANY death tolls in Perth as we do in Sydney !!
And yes, I am from Perth, so I too, know what it's like...
I can't even drive my daughter home without being harassed by a bunch of hooligans, who should be able to clearly see my "child in car" sign !!!!!
The thing I don't understand is.. if they don't care about other people's safety, how about their own ?
Oh.. that's right.. they DON'T think anything will happen to them, do they ?!
You know what ? I did every single hour required for my log book, before I got my P Plates !
My dad (who used to be a driving instructor 20 years ago) got me to drive from our home to university for 2 hours a day.. in good conditions, in bad conditions, wet, dry, everything...
And you know what ? I am now proud to say that I'm a better driver because of it...
Perth needs more laws like these !!!!!!!!
But anywho, great article Chantell, thank you for bringing up a very serious topic...
I think that everybody should take these laws seriously... and hopefully Perth may get some in the future !
