Help For Kids With ADHD/ADD

LisaPetrarca by LisaPetrarca Talking Back(July 2007) (rank 111th)

I was told I should put my son on ADHD/ADD medication, but after doing intense research and reading the statistics of the number of children who turn to drugs as adults after being on ADHD/ADD medication, I opted for a different method. My son who is now 18 years old

was diagnosed with ADD and a learning disability (which is very common with ADHD/ADD), at the age of 12.  I started him on Omega 3 supplements.  I chose a highly concentrated EPA & DHA supplement that also contained a natural triglyceride (which helps maintain the potency in your system during the digestive process).

After six months of taking the fish oil, three times a day, I saw amazing results!  My son not only had better concentration, but his mood swings were less severe, and frequent. His memory also greatly improved.  After one year of being on the supplements, my son tested out of the Special Education/IEP Program for speech and language therapy. His reading and comprehension test results jumped from a 3rd grade level to a 9th grade level.  The team of teachers could not believe the results and  wanted to know what I had done differently.  When I told them that the only difference was the supplements, they said that they wish I could tell other parents.

In closing, don't just take my word for it, please do your own research as to the benefits of Omega 3 supplements.  There are several studies done by major Universities such as Harvard and Pittsburgh to back up my statements.  As a mother, who has walked in your shoes, I feel your pain and hope my experience will lead you on a path that will be beneficial not only to your children, but your entire family.

75yr old PhD Australian Naturopath Michael Sichel interview by Sky Health News is a must to view on utube. He talks about ADHD,autism behavioural disorders reversing them without drugs. Wish I had known about him years ago. Never too late to learn. Hope it helps.

Re: Help For Kids With ADHD/ADD

I have tried everything for my son with ADHD including the kitchen sink! to help him, I tried supplements, changing his diet, & both at once, in the end I had to try retalin and I must say it is the only thing that had worked he takes 20mg per day and sticks to a very strict diet with no preservatives, over the school holidays I kept him off the drugs and kept him on the diet but by the end of the holidays he was out of control.

don't get me wrong please he is not dopped to the hills he still has the same old Aaron spark he can only now stop and think before he does anything. his grades have improved out of sight and he will now be able to move onto high school next year. I have also noticed that he has a lot more friends now and I feel the only reason for this is because he is not so jumpy and takes time to get to know people.

My peds was very good at exploring different methods before putting him on drugs we kept a diary of food behavour for both home and school.

I know some say that chn can get addicted to harder drugs by being on retlian but that is if it is not controled by parents and doctors, Aaron will not be on drugs for the reat of his life the peds says that pubity can make a huge difference and once we get his levels right he will be able to come off the drugs and continue with the diet as long as it is strict.

Re: Help For Kids With ADHD/ADD

I had a student in my class when I was a teacher who had ADHD, and his mother tried the same thing, she refused to put him on retalin and without trying the supplements first, It worked and I noticed great results with him. I have to say that mothers who are willing to take the risk for the sake of their children and put up with extra pressure for the benefit of their children are worth more than a golden medal.

Re: Help For Kids With ADHD/ADD

WoW! My Son was diagnosed w/ADD when he was only in the 1st grade. It was right smack dab in during the time when the whole 'Ritalin' debate was kickin' off, so when I brought my Son in to see the Dr. I made it clear I did NOT want him on Ritalin, or any form of 'legal speed'. Well; you can prolly guess what happened next? He was given 'Cylert' which is just another form of Ritalin. He was doing good until he overheard me talking to a friend & saying it was merely another 'speed subsitute'. Although it did work well, [his Teacher was soooo happy] it none the less was Speed in it's purest form. I just wish I would of known of your exp. w/Omega 3 supplements... My Son is now 20 yrs. old! Yeah, TIME FLIES! Thanx for your advise, as my Grandson has been diagnosed & now I can tell my Daughter about this! Take care, & Thanx again! *Dawnna*

Re: Help For Kids With ADHD/ADD

Well done for finding an alternative that worked for you and your family not least your son with ADD.  There are many contributory factors and whle medication can be the right thing for some it is good to explore the alternatives and maybe use a combination of things.

Peace

Re: Help For Kids With ADHD/ADD

My son was also diagnosed with ADHD, I did research and gave him the Omega 3 and 6 supplements, it worked!!! before that he was on Tofranil for a year, I discussed his medication with his paeditrition and she said it is up to me to deside, so I did, I took him off the Tofranil and he now takes Bio Strath tablets every day and the Omega's I can see the difference in him, and how he gets better everyday. He inheritited theADHD from me, I was very busy during my pregnancy with him, I tiled floors ,walls etc while I was pregnant with him. The guilt of me giving him ADHD is busy eating me alive, but I am coping in my own way. I will surently follow the advise giving here on Minti . Thanks.

Re: Help For Kids With ADHD/ADD

Omega 3 and Omega 6 were recomended for my adhd son too. There are lots of things out there which can help like therapy, counselling, anger management. I product tested a site and found amazing results with my son and it is so easy for him to use too, it helped him learn how to breathe calmly when he was geting worked up and how to distract himself when he was getting taunted de to his Tics. This site is not just used for ADHD but for all children as it teaches then life skills that all of us need.

www.AnimalAgentz.com

check it out and I hope it helps adhd children as it did mine!

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!  I think everyone needs to know that there are alternatives and sometimes trying natural products before you jump to medicating your child is a better option.

Hi
Wonder if it works with Aspergers as well
Might have to try it on my son.
Spose it can't hurt and if it only improves his concentration slightly anything is better than nothing .

Re: Help For Kids With ADHD/ADD

In doing my research, Omega 3 was also tested on individuals with autism, alzheimers and mild and manic depression, it seems that there was noted improvement in all of the above mentioned diseases.  I now currently have my whole family as well as myself, taking supplements.  It has also cleared up my kids and husbands allergies and asthma (no more inhalers! yay!).   After speaking with my kids pediatrician, she said  she has seen very similar results in other children she has treated.  She felt that there will be larger studies done in the future  as to the many benefits of fish oil.  What a relief to see the medical community joining in on recommending something without side effects!

Good Luck!!!!

P.S.  Remember the higher the EPA & DHA  in the supplement, the better the results.

Re: Help For Kids With ADHD/ADD

I agree that there are an awful lot of scripts written for add/adhd drugs.  Scary cuz they are pretty potent drugs.  Hopefully, there can be more studies done with natural treatments and things such as diet modification and the sort to help guide away from chemical treatments.  Thanks for sharing.
