Guillian Barre Syndrome in Children

janicepovey by janicepovey Talking Back(July 2007) (rank 35th)

After reading my own advice - i realised anybody reading this, could come to the conclusion, that "G.B.S" only affects adults. That couldn't be further from the truth, i'm sorry to say that this awful disease effects "ALL AGES'.  So firstly i apologise if i mis-lead, readers.

There are many cases of children contracting "G.B.S"- one recorded case was - a 6 year old girl. She ended up on life support for 3 months- in a wheelchair for 1 year and had 18 months of gruelling re-hab.

This is a hideous disease that strikes all ages.

I know i wrote this advice, as it was personal to me, but here on minti, i really wanted to " ALERT"  Mum's everywhere of the early signs of "G.B.S" & "mis-diagnosis"

........... Flu like symptoms

.......... Weakness

.......... Pins & Needles

......... Breathing Problems

......... In Pain

"The Earlier" "G.B.S" is diagnosed, the less likely-hood of the patient ending up on life support, less nerve damage. Within hours a patient can be standing on their own 2 feet, to being paralyzed from the waist down, (it's that quick)

All "G.B.S" patients have to learn to walk again, it is like watching a baby trying to take it's first steps, but very painful.  Many patients say it is like walking on broken glass, ( that is what it is like for my husband also)

I would hate to think of any parent, going through this, with their child. It would be heartbreaking!

"Fore Warned is Fore Armed"

Kindest Reagds Janice

How do you manage to keep track of everything and take care of your husband too?  I struggle to get out of bed everyday, let alone care for someone who is less capable of caring for themselves.  you sound so wonderful.

Keep being strong.
