Guillian Barre Syndrome in Children

janicepovey by janicepovey Minti Founder(July 2007) (rank 29th)

After reading my own advice - i realised anybody reading this, could come to the conclusion, that "G.B.S" only affects adults. That couldn't be further from the truth, i'm sorry to say that this awful disease effects "ALL AGES'.  So firstly i apologise if i mis-lead, readers.

There are many cases of children contracting "G.B.S"- one recorded case was - a 6 year old girl. She ended up on life support for 3 months- in a wheelchair for 1 year and had 18 months of gruelling re-hab.

This is a hideous disease that strikes all ages.

I know i wrote this advice, as it was personal to me, but here on minti, i really wanted to " ALERT"  Mum's everywhere of the early signs of "G.B.S" & "mis-diagnosis"

........... Flu like symptoms

.......... Weakness

.......... Pins & Needles

......... Breathing Problems

......... In Pain

"The Earlier" "G.B.S" is diagnosed, the less likely-hood of the patient ending up on life support, less nerve damage. Within hours a patient can be standing on their own 2 feet, to being paralyzed from the waist down, (it's that quick)

All "G.B.S" patients have to learn to walk again, it is like watching a baby trying to take it's first steps, but very painful.  Many patients say it is like walking on broken glass, ( that is what it is like for my husband also)

I would hate to think of any parent, going through this, with their child. It would be heartbreaking!

"Fore Warned is Fore Armed"

Kindest Reagds Janice

Re: Guillian Barre Syndrome in Children

It is a horrible thing. I have known 2 people affected by it. It takes such a long time to recover and they were both lucky to do so. Best wishes to you and your husband. Thanks for the info.

Re: Guillian Barre Syndrome in Children

I hope the people you know made a full recovery, as my Husband suffers from effects of GBS daily and is so painful for him and for me to watch him suffer...he has permanent nerve damage to his feet.

Thanks for the well wishes.

GBS is a fairly new disease as far as diseases go but it certainly is making a mark for itself.

Re: Guillian Barre Syndrome in Children

my aunty was diagnosed with G.B.S and went through hell, can't even begin to imagine how it would affect a child. my aunty was put into an induced coma and when she came out of it had to learn everything all over again, nowadays she's better but still suffers the effects of the disease.

Re: Guillian Barre Syndrome in Children

Sorry to hear about your Aunt and that she still suffers the effects of GBS as does my husband, he even had a relapse, which we  were not informed about, that it can come back.

You are right also, doctors put many GBS patients into a reduced coma, by doing this ti saves many lives.

Re: Guillian Barre Syndrome in Children

Yes it is that quick, frightening isn't it and they still don't have a   reason what causes it.

So hope your daughter  made a full recovery and has not any long term effects like my Husband does.

How do you manage to keep track of everything and take care of your husband too?  I struggle to get out of bed everyday, let alone care for someone who is less capable of caring for themselves.  you sound so wonderful.

Keep being strong.
