Potty Training

kellahan by kellahan Speaking(July 2007) (rank 500+)

We all know how daunting potty training can be on both the parent and the child. It can be very frustrating at times. Often the child doesn't want to go on there, and if there is a baby in the house, it can be even harder, as they try to

'compete' with their younger sibling.

I found one way that helps encourage the child to go on the potty and that is a little reward. With both of my girls i made a chart to hang on the toilet door. Each time they went on the potty they got a stamp or a sticker on their chart. If it was just a number one, they got one sticker. If it was a number two, they got two stickers. If they didn't make it and had a little accident they simply got a X on the chart. I explained to the girls that if they had one while week with no X on the chart then they could pick something nice as a reward for their efforts. It seemed to work well for them both and they now have big bears on their beds to show for it. A little encouragemnt goes a long way.

Re: Potty Training

Excellent idea.......star charts are great things, you can use them for just about everything. I'll definately be using one for my boy when we start to toilet train him.

Re: Potty Training
If only I could use the sticker chart idea. My little darling monster has an infinity with removing the stickers and labels off everything, even his toys. So I resorted to little jelly beans. He bored of them so I got a big bag of smarties and mixed lollies and mixed them together in a container. He gets a big one like a snake for doing poos. It seems to work for him....ahhh they're all different little people!!

Re: Potty Training
Depending on the age of course, charts are a good idea.  I've also heard of smarties being used.  One smartie for a number 1s, 2 smarties for number 2s.  Mine was only just over 1 when we started so she wouldn't have understood star charts.  They work now for things like making her bed and so on though so a fantastic idea.  So long as they are not overused and kids get to the stage where they expect a reward for everything they do.

Re: Potty Training
Not a problem. It gives them something to look forward to and letting them choose the reward is even more encouraging because you know it's something they really want and will aim to get.

Re: Potty Training
I'm sure I'll be potty/toilet training my daughter in the upcoming months. A chart is a great idea to help encourage her! Thank-you, Kylie
