10 tips on keeping the crib safe

rockclimbr4400 by rockclimbr4400 Talking(July 2007) (rank 239th)
So its time for baby to go night night. How do you know if the bed is safe or not? It is important to be sure your child can roll around, move, and sleep without being in danger. Here are 10 things to check on.

1. Make sure your sheet is tight enough. You don't want it coming off in the middle of the night and baby getting tangled.
2. Make sure all blankets are loose. The blankets people make with thte holes in them are beautiful, but until your baby is old enough to not get their fingers stuck, save these blankets for when they are older.
3. Make sure there are no pillows in the bed with your child until they can move well enough to get away from the pillow.
4. If you choose to let your baby sleep with a stuffed animal or blanket make sure there are no pieces that could cause a choking hazard if they came off such as buttons, strings, or yarn.
5. Use a bumper pad once your child is old enough to crawl or stand up in the crib so they don't bump their head. But make sure they can't get their hands or feet through and get stuck.
6. if your baby is crying or making noise before they go to sleep, once you don't hear them anymore, check to make sure they are asleep and not tangled in anything.
7. Make sure all mobiles are high enough so that if your child can stand up, they can't pull the toy on top of themselves.
8. If you have pictures hanging around the crib, be sure they are secure enough and won't fall on your child or in their bed.
9. Make sure you lay your baby on their back for sleep. Once they can roll over, it is ok, but until they are mobile enough to move in a comfortable position, keep them on their backs.
10. If you let your baby sleep in your bed, consider using a co-sleeping insert (like a small bed that sits in your bed) that keeps you from rolling on your child.

Happy sleeping!

Re: 10 tips on keeping the crib safe
Hi this is lovely advice, and it certainly is important to think about.

Though I think the baby in the illustration shouldn't have the blankets around it's head like that, because if it turned it's head, it could get blankets stuck over it's mouth and nose.  Also, SIDS Australia recommend having a bare cot - no bumpers (babies can suffocate against them), no blankets or toys.  The only reason we allowed our baby to have toys from about 6mths old, was because we had a sound and movement monitor which would alert if he stopped breathing (which he didn't).
