Maybe it's just our family, because we're slightly addicted to television and movies, but we have a small collection of DVDs for our daughter. Don't get me wrong, she's active, and we do plenty of other things with her. But when we need her to wind down after a busy day,

it's nice to throw on a movie to have her settle.
As with any object in the house, they get pretty damn mucky. They might last over 100 years when protected in their crystal case, but not when vegimite gets smeared on the disk. So I've resorted to ripping our DVD collection to a computer and putting digital copies on our modified XBox. That way we can just select the show from the menu, and away it plays. No more fiddling with disks.
Now in all honesty, with the arcane copyright law in Australia, this is actually illegal (I'm told the law is being revised and may not be in issue in the near future). But I've thrown caution tot he wind to ensure we don't have any issues when Miss She-Who-Rules-The-House needs to watch her favourite show.
Being an Uber-Geek this might be taking it to a new level, but I'd recommend backing up al your DVDs. Just copy them using computer software to a blank disk. That way you can store you originals safe and sound, ensuring you keep them protected.
