Teach a Toddler to Brush His Teeth

pfallerj by pfallerj Proud Parent(July 2007) (rank 12th)

Getting your toddler to brush his teeth can be a huge feat in and of itself. It’ll probably take them until they’re 4 or 5 to truly master it to the point where you don’t have to supervise. Even if they manage to not eat and swallow

the toothpaste like it was candy, you’ll still need to make sure they get everywhere they need to.

That said, different techniques work for different kids’ personalities. Here are some of the basics to set yourself up for success, and some tips to encourage this essential habit.

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush designed for kids
  • Use non-fluoridated toothpaste that’s got a flavor your kid enjoys
  • Make brushing part of a routine. My son brushes in the morning after breakfast and at night after his bedtime snack
  • If they fight at first, don’t worry. Try to make it fun and if they put up a huge fuss, leave it for another night. They’ll get used to it.
  • Brush with them. Brush your own teeth with your toothbrush or theirs.
  • Use two toothbrushes. One for them to use and one for you to do the real cleaning.
  • Make funny noises and open your mouth wide. When they crack a grin whoosh in with the toothbrush.
  • Brush in small circles. Get the tops, bottoms, fronts and backs of their teeth and gums.
  • Don’t force it. The second they stop having fun (at least in the beginning), the more they’ll fight it.

Re: Teach a Toddler to Brush His Teeth
Good advice! I've tried a number of  these things & Isabella is still stubborn about getting her teeth brushed. She's not interested in brushing her teeth when I do, she just sucks on the toothbrush, but hopefully she'll start copying my technique soon. One thing I haven't tried is using two brushes with her, so I can do the real cleaning while she's practicing with another one., that's a great idea! Thanks, Kylie

Re: Teach a Toddler to Brush His Teeth
I was always told that it needs to be done for them in a turn-for-turn type fashion until the age of 8 then fully supervised until they are around 11 or 12.  Important advice, this is something people can put off as it sometimes causes trouble.  I've not had problems with brushing teeth so long as we do turn-for-turn and she gets to brush mine too HEHEHE.

Another great idea! Maybe if I let Isabella brush my teeth she'll let me do hers! Thanks, Kylie

I never had problems getting them to brush their teeth when they were younger, it is now as they are older and just want to get out of the house in the quickest time possible that it doesn't always happen. Cheers Leisa

Weel done. I didn;t have any prob's doing grubs teeth until he got the last lot of nasty molars. Then I resorted to buying him a winnie the pooh toothbrush and toothpaste, and for the times when that doesn't work, we have a toothbrush with a flashing light in it!! The things we do to get things done!!

Great advice, I am trying with Harrison and the minute he gets cranky, I stop.  It has helped for me to brush my teeth with him.  And he likes my toothbrush too.  We do what we can to get his mouth open and the brush in there!  Eventually, it will be second nature to him.
