Mothers with Premature babies!

Rainermcc2 by Rainermcc2 Walking(July 2006) (rank 500+)
Hello.  I just felt I need to write about my daughter Taylor.  I am a first time mother who gave birth to a baby girl at 24weeks.  She weight 1LB 6OZ at birth and was 13in long.  To this day the doctors and nurse do not know why.
It was a up and down battle.  The dotor came back in the room a few mintues later, and told me they were flying her to another hospital.  He said IF she survived the flight that she may have a 20% chance of living, but will probably be brain dead.  Well she made it to the hospital and was stable.  She was still doing fine the next and the next and the next.  SHe had a hard battle, but that doctor didn't know mt little girls will to live.  I just want you mothers and fathers who are going through this to know that things will get better.  I know you think that one day everything is going great, then the next things are really bad.  It is a rollercoster, but never give up.  Taylor is my daughter and she will be 2 in December. She was in the hospital for 4 months, and it was the longest 4 months of my life.  But bringing home my daughter  was the greatest thing in my life.   She is a healthy happy little girl today.  She did have developmental delays, but is catching up great.  Just know that there are others going through the same thing, and if you ever have any question always feel free to email me (Rainermcc2@bellsouth.net)  I will be glad to pray for you and your little ones, and answer any questions you my have.         Alicia

Re: Mothers with Premature babies!

My daughter was born 13 weeks early, weighing 855g (1lb 14oz) and as you say, life in hospital has its ups and downs.  I found the first three months at home to be harder, as I didn't have the support of other premmie parents and hospital staff around me every day.

For mums of premature babies in Australia, I really recommend L'il Aussie Prems (www.lilaussieprems.com.au) - I joined the forum and it really helped me get through some difficult times and also make some good friends who understood where I was coming from.

Re: Mothers with Premature babies!

hi

my son was a preemie baby and has just turned 2. he still has a few health problems, and new ones are showing their heads all the time but some of them he will grow out of and some he wont.

but you are right it is a up and down roller-coaster but it is worth it in the end to be able to hold your child and to know that they have fort for their lives and made it through.

gecko-buba was born at 31.5 weeks and weighed only 2kgs had a lot of trouble with his breathing and we almost lost him because of it. Christmas of 06 we were still been asked how many weeks old was he cause he was still so small but after Christmas he had a huge growth spurt, he is doing well now still has a lot of lung/breathing problems, and a few other health issues but apart from them is doing really well.

he is also above all the percentiles so even with everything going on he's still doing well.  he is a happy and energetic 2 year old.

i also meant to add that there are lots of support groups out there, ask your GP or GYN/OB and even your hospital as they will come in handy.

http://www.marchofdimes.com/aboutus/787.asp - this is a good one

http://www.austprem.org.au/ -  this is the one that we were put onto when gecko-buba was born

http://www.momentbymoment.com.au/cafeprem/momentbymoment/Support%2BGroup/ - another good one

Re: Mothers with Premature babies!

My son, ROMAN was born at 27 wks (2lbs 10oz)- spent 8 wks in the hospital- he was breathing "room air" just needing the canula tube- Well, 3 wks after he was born, he had to get the PDA ligation surgery and had to be on the ventilator which we found out about 3 months later the ventilator made scar tissue blocking his airway- Roman had to undergo over 10 surgeries over a 4 month period to open the airway that continued to develop scar tissue or subglottic cysts preventing the flow of 100% oxygen. Remarkably, by GOD's GRACE, a world renowned doctor at LUCILLE PACKARD children's hospital at STANFORD was able to manage this issue w/o having to perform a tracheotomy- Though we still see the doctor over 200 miles away from where we live, his airway issue is being managed and DOC says he will grow out of it. TODAY, Roman is 16 months and doing GREAT- walking, talking, comprehending, very smart boy despite "the odds"- our family is grateful that all the hard work put into the development of Roman continues to be rewarding. We did and continue to go above and beyond to assist w/ his development so he will continue to  "defy the odds"- There is POWER IN PRAYER!

Re: Mothers with Premature babies!

my son was a 29 weeker 1.2 kilos , 66 days in the NCU. he is now three and has been diagnosed with moderate developemntal delay. he was slow to reach alll his milestones but reached them in the end. all the literature suggests prems do catch up when they are about 8 years old

i am currently totally freaking out about the last diagnosis and assessment - anyone out there with some positve stories about older prems please share them .

Prem Baby
My son was born at 27wks and spent 3.5mths in hospital He had the normal prem problems of Chronic Lung Disease, Hernia which was operated on & PDA which corrected itself after 2 doses of Endomethisin (sp?).

I have just joined a new site called L'il Aussie Prems which is a support site for parents of premature babies in Australia and it's the best thing i ever did because prem parents know exactly what we are going through with milestones etc..

It was a great story - thanks for sharing. Glad Taylor is doing fine now :)

My advice to you.
I to had a premmie baby born 3ths (@29weeks) at home thank god for the ambo's. Caitlin weighed 1100grms, had a bleed on the brain and a heart valve which had not closed. Thank god for us everything healed itself and she has no side effects, Caitlin will be 4 in Dec 06. But i have to agree with the above mentioned, Caitlin stayed in hospital for 3mths and we were told 3 steps forward 1 step backwards. I used to go in and sit with her for hours holding her hand and strokinking her hair, just to let her know mummy and daddy was there. I also joined S.A.N.D.S. (still born and neonatel death syndrome) for a support group, best thing i ever did.

Premature babies

I was a permature baby when I was born. But only a few week's I think. I was small, less than 5lbs I think. But when I finally ended up coming home I was weighing in at 5lbs 2oz and I dont know how long I was.
I was a little worried when I got pregnant because I thought that I would end up having a premature baby. But she was only 6 days early and she weighed alot more than I did that's for sure.

Great article!!

Our first one was at 25 weeks, about one pound and a half.  Same stories and fears, but he is now 6 years old and doing very well.  We subsquently had another girl (4) and boy (0) and they were almost term.  You need to find out why the girl was so premature - in our case it was pre-eclampsia caused by Factor V Leiden, and daily Heparine injections and other blood thinners appear to have helped.  Good luck!Have your say!

Thanks for reply..  It is a long hard road, but it has gotten easier for me now.  It is amazing how you can have one baby so small and the next child can be at normal weight.  I still have fears about having more children, but to hear from others who have continued to have children and know that they were fine helps a lot.  Thank you so much.   ALicia

A great story - thanks for sharing. Glad Taylor is doing fine.

My first by was prem - but only 6 weeks. He's now 2, and still the shortest in his calss, but then I'm short as well so it could just be hereditary! When I got pregant again the doctors all flustered and monitoired me a lot and gave me all sorts of injections just in case I was prem again - but number 2 was only 2.5 weeks early (which doesn't really count as early at all!).

Hello. I am worried about having more children because they dont know what caused the first one. Glad to know your little one is ok. Taylor is also short. SHe also has a little head. :) But she is here and that is a blessing. I was wondering what caused your child to be premature, or do they know?

No, they had no idea, they tested for all sorts of infections but found nothing. Eventually they decided maybe it was because he was so active that he kickstarted labour himself...but they were really just guessing.

Taylor was also very active.  I was have problems by my forth month, but this being my first child I was not sure what was going on.  I got really bad cramps at night, and she would kick me as if she was doing flips.:)  So how early was your little one?
