Old CDs and DVDs

Ngairi by Ngairi Talking Back(July 2007) (rank 48th)

Do you have any old CD's or DVDs lying around the house? Any that may not work anymore? Or maybe you use blank ones that sometimes don't copy?

Well don't throw them away. We love to make different things out of them.

When my youngest was about 2, I loved gluing 2 of them together (shiny sound out), put some wool around the middle and then hung them on the arms of the clothes line. During the day, when the sun shines on them, they give little circles of light on the ground that Connor just loved to chase when I spun the line around, or they made rainbows on the wall at the back of the laundry.

I also made some wind chimes with them, by attaching a little bell on the end of some fishing line that was strung between the two discs before glueing. Just use 2 coathangers crossed over for the top.

Another thing you can make for Christmas is unique cards with them. They are like little plate things. You cut a picture off an old used card (or use wrapping paper, print a picture anything really), decorate with glitter glue and give it to grandma as a gift. Works for birthdays too!)

Another Christmas one, get a pine cone, stick the disc on the base with the shiny side up, decorate the pine cone Chritmas tree and the disc is the base to help it stand up. Makes a good centrepiece for the table.

If you can find a place that sells flat sheets of cork, you can make drink coasters out of them, A set of 6 makes a good Christmas gift. If you put photos on them and coat with a few layers of laquer, this gives an individual twist to them.

If you are into mosaics, smashing some discs up makes a great mosaic tile for an outdoor project. The sun reflects off them really well.

If you purchase the clock mechanism (you can get them from Spotlight or some hardwares) you can make an interesting little clock.

Stick a picture on it and a magnet on the back and it becomes a fridge magnet.

There are all sorts of different ideas to use all those discs. Just have a look on the net and you will be surprised what you come up with. I love making Christmas presents and I have so many discs left over at my place that this year it will different things for everyone, but with a recycled theme.

Happy crafitng.

Re: Old CDs and DVDs
Great idea - ScubaSteve goes through quite a lot, and sometimes when you buy them in sets of 100 or whatever there are 3-4 which are no good.  At the moment we save them for his Grandma to tie to her rose bushes to keep the birds at bay - they seem to freak them out with all that light reflecting in the wind.

Hi there,

Last year I put all my old CD's in my fruit tree and they scared away all the birds - I got a really bumper crop . . .

cheers Kellz

Love these crafty ideas that don't cost a lot and use recycling. I don't know how many I have thrown out after the kids have left them out of the cover to be scratched or the ones that just haven't worked in the burn process.
