Thyroid - over or under active and the difference

Cedes by Cedes Speaking(July 2007) (rank 335th)

Children and adults alike can have either one or the other, but not both. An overactive thyroid causes weight loss but it's actually an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) which causes  weight gain. There seems to be a lot of confusion on this point, so I hope this clears up any confusion.

A simple home test using a thermometer can determine if a person does actually have an underactive thyroid gland. It requires taking one's temperature before moving from the bed every morning for a week. If the temperature is consistently low - 96 to 97 degrees, then an underactive thyroid is probable, even if blood tests say otherwise. Of course the thermometer would need to be shaken down and made ready the night before so that minimal movement occurs on the mornings of the test week. The most cost effective way to keep your thyroid healthy is to go outside  within the first hour of sunrise and look toward (but not directly at) the sun. Direct light at this time of the day stimulates the pineal gland which in turn positively affects the thyroid as well as all the endocrine glands. (This exercise will not work looking at it through a window or through glasses). If the early bird approach is not for you, then choose synthetic free hormones  in your food ie;  free-range eggs, organic meat and dairy products, etc., as well as fatty acids which are found in fish oil. A good dose to aim for would be between 3 to 6 of the 1000mg caps a day, or 10ml of liquid Melrose fish oil with lemon, which is equivalent to 10 capsules a day and is half the price. It also contains the correct amount of vitamin E which is the 'bus' necessary for the fish oil to work properly. If you don't like the taste, then stick to the capsules and take vitamin E at the same time, otherwise, you will just be wasting your money. To correct a thyroid imbalance, your doctor should be consulted. If he is properly acquainted with thyroid testing, he should be willing to do a range of other medical tests besides blood tests, to accurately detect the problem. Treating the condition with Armour Thyroid (a non-synthetic extract of animal thyroid that provides the full complement of thyroid hormones) is the best option if your doctor is willing to consider it.
