Weaning

Mandy460 by Mandy460 Talking(July 2007) (rank 285th)

I have just started to wean my baby girl Jaida. She is 6mths and I will do exactly what I did for the first one as it was fantastic. I hear alot of Mums complaining of toddlers who are fussy eaters so I thought I can give a bit

of advice on this one..

As you know I live in Kenya (very far from home) so as a first time Mum,  I turned to a few books to help along the way. When Jasmine was ready to wean, I followed a book by Annabel Karmel - The Complete Baby Meal Planner. It was the best thing I think I have done for my daughter. This book starts of with great advice like more veggies less fruit so the baby want always want sweet things etc.. The thing I loved was that with each recipe, there was a different herb or spice added. This really widened Jasmines tastes and she is happy to try anything. Like the book says, when she tries different foods they are a little familiar to her as she was introduced to many flavors early on. It is also very balanced so you know your baby is getting everything they need. It isn’t as time consuming as people think to cook the baby food either. I store the purees in air tight ice block trays and thaw a cube or 2 at a time, So I only need to cook once a week.

There are also alot of recipes in there for the whole family, which I sometimes use now that is 2.5yrs.

My friend followed this also, her daughter is 6mths older than Jasmine and now when we go for play dates other Mums think is funny how our girls reach for the Asparagus and strawberries instead of the biscuits!

Another of our friends has a 2yr old son who want eat anything but sweet things and sausages and chips.. She didn’t want the same for her daughter who is now 9mths. She tried out recipes in this book for her daughter who loves her lentils and veggies!

I hope this helps.

Re: Weaning
Great advice. I added a new ingredient every week and I have never had an issue getting mine to eat. Another important point I want to point out is...

1. Never force your child to eat. This will make food a negative thing that they wont enjoy.
2. If your child doesn't like a new food this week, keep trying. Make it again in a month and see then. I have found with mine that they have not liked something one week and liked it the next.

Re: Weaning
That sounds like a great book, although my children are older but for our new one i will really consider the book.I never thought about the more veges less fruit thing thats a good tip.I know one of my children wont eat anything without sugar or salt sprinkled on sometimes i have to just pretend to sprinkle it just to keep the peace.

Re: Weaning

Great article! I've used Annabel Karmel too - lovely recipes!

The only things I'd like to add is that if they're interested in what's on your plate, let them try it! Of course, it helps if you eat with them for this. They all seem to go thru a stage of thinking that what's on your plate must be better than what's on theirs (even if it's the same) - you can get them to taste all sorts of stuff that way! And I heard on the radio that a child has to taste something 10 times before they recognise it, and if they dont recognise it, they wont like it. So each and every way you can sneak each taste under the radar will count towards that 10! Both mine have always loved houmous - I often wonder if it's coz I love houmous sandwiches during pregnancy and breastfeeding! The garlic must make it into the amniotic fluid and milk, I reckon!!!

Re: Weaning
Just a hint I heard once, you can use mashed peas or grated carrot in spaghetti sauce and they don't even know it's there

Re: Weaning
Thanks, great advice.  I never read the book, have never heard of it but will be sure to purchase it as a baby gift for the next person who has a baby! All my daughter's food was home cooked, although I had a few jars of food in the pantry as back up.  I also introduced her to things early on so she had a taste for different foods.  She is now nearly 4, will try anything at least once, turns her nose up at puddings and chocolates (loves her chips and lollies though lol) and reaches for fruit and veges.  She loves spinnach, asparagus, all the things lots of kids her age refuse to eat.  Her favourite food is still sushi, so if I tell her I want to buy lunch she'll always ask for salmon and avocado sushi!  I put different herbs and spices in her food sometimes too although I've been a bit careful with things like that.  I've never added salt and pepper to any of our dishes.  Don't eat it myself so I wouldn't add it anyway.  But that's great and I'll write down the name of that book and order it.

Re: Weaning

That book is a pressie i would def give to Mums to be also!

Thats great your little girl is into the good stuff also, its so funny to watch as people just dont expect toddlers to go for the healthy choices.. Jaz loves her lollies too but she often chooses the fruit or veggies first and that is the good start i wanted for her. Funny, Jaz like sushi also! The prawn and Avocado!

have a good day xx
