Setting a Routine

hoprah by hoprah Speaking(July 2007) (rank 298th)

Lachlan is now just over 6 and a half months and I am thrilled that he has been sleeping through the night without needing to feed since about 10 weeks old.  I have some friends who have children around the same age and are still needing to feed through the

night resulting in two very tired parents in the morning! I wanted to let my fellow Minti's know about a great person called Gina Ford, Author of the book series The Contented Little Baby Book.

Admittedly, you REALLY should get this BEFORE baby is born and read up on it but I wasn't aware of it until Lachlan was 8 weeks.  Ta Da!  2 weeks later, this Mum and Dad were having 7 hours of sleep.  We would wake Lachlan up at 1030 for a final feed and he would then sleep through until 6-7am! It's can be a little tough for the first few days you are trying to make a routine but babies LOVE routines and bub should respond to it within a few days.

If you do buy the book a few weeks or so AFTER you bring bub home, read firstly the routine you are going with first and also pages 27 - 35, 75-113 over the next day or so and then you can start reading the bits of book you haven’t read later on in the week and future. I have this book and her book The Contented Little Baby Book of Weaning and I read and re-read parts of the book every night. Only a page or two, but it keeps all of this routine stuff in my head! Hubby and I found that if we clustered Lachlan’s feeds (5pm, and 6pm and then a short feed at 630) in the evening and then gave him a top up bottle (little piggy took 200mls most nights) at 1030 he started sleeping through. We also encouraged him to sleep through because for about 3 or 4 nights in a row, we KNEW that he really had enough food in the tummy to get him through and that he was just waking out of habit, when he woke or started to wake we would go in and pop his dummy back in his mouth (some people don’t like dummy’s – personal preference) and/or shhh and pat him back to sleep. Within 4 nights of doing this, he was sleeping through.

I hope at least one other Minti gets some help from this Advice and this book. I can’t rate it high enough!!!

Re: Setting a Routine

LOL!  Exactly the reason why I wanted to post about it.  It's worked wonders for us (maybe different for other babies and mummies) but I wanted to let other new or prospective Mums know!  Thanks for your reply!

Re: Setting a Routine
I can't stand that book to be honest.  It's very distant and I do not agree with any of it, particularly the part about setting a time for a breastfeed! It goes against what health authorities are trying to make people aware of, it goes against nature as well.  I've voted this as neutral though even though "Advice did not work for me" because I think giving it 1 star is a little harsh.

No dramas!  Everyone has a different opinion on things.  If we were all the same and liked the same stuff, this world would be as boring as heck!

Re: Setting a Routine
This is true and exactly the reason I refuse to vote it as Advice did not work for me.  It does not deserve a 1 star because it was well written even if I despise that woman and that book and refuse to have it or any of what it stands for in my home.
