Older Children & Bedwetting

LisaPetrarca by LisaPetrarca Talking(July 2007) (rank 114th)
This is a very sensitive subject not only for the children involved but as a parent.  It is frustrating & hard to understand.  Why is it that some children continually wet the bed well into their teens?  My son had this problem.  I spent so many nights trying to stop him from drinking after 7:00pm, to having an alarm to wake him up.  When nothing seemed to work, I opted for the pills.  He took them every night before bed.  We would try and ween him slowly off of them, but he would always seem to have "accidents".  I made sure my other children didn't tease him and that they were not allowed to tell their friends.  I didn't want my son to feel so ashamed and embarrased and have it affect his self esteem.  So, we kept the plastic cover on the mattress and just dealt with it.  Finally after about two years of taking the bedwetting pills, he stopped.  He ran out of pills and we waited and he never had another accident.  My advice to all of you parents going through the same thing, is do not make your child feel ashamed.  It is something that they cannot help and with patience and treatment, it will get better.

We haven't hit this hurdle yet, hopefully we won't - however, if we do, this and the shared information below will be very handy... It isn't the kind of thing that people like to talk about, so it must be very isolating for the whole family - not just the child or children involved.

Re: Older Children & Bedwetting
All mine do unfortunately, BUT the last two days I have had no accidents, it's been great!!! All of mine are on the nasal spray (minirin) except the youngest as he's not old enough yet.  I find that cutting down drinks actually makes things worse, not better.  I wet right into my late teens myself, and I used to deliberately stop myself drinking and make myself worse as in the end, I kept getting kidney infections, and my lack of fluid intake shrunk my bladder, therefore I had VERY bad bladder capacity, so of course I ended up wetting just as much.  I DID have VERY low self  esteem because of it all, as I had no idea that other people were the same as me until I became an adult!!! My boys are well aware that there are other children out there going through the same thing, and I just tell them that one day it will stop.

My 5yr old still does, and if he is really exhausted and in a very deep sleep, the 15 yr old has been known to have the odd accident too. The kids know just to strip the bed and if necessary take the mattress downstairs. Never have we ever made a big deal of it. Though my mother makes my 5yr old wear a nappy to bed at her place. He hates it and takes it off after she leaves the room.
