Drano Hidden danger's you can never be too safe

Deborahsc2203 by Deborahsc2203 Talking Back(July 2007) (rank 337th)

Im writing this because this just happened lastnight

My kitchen sink was blocked so i went to the supermarrket and got some drano

my 16 year old son wanted to read the instructions and unblock the sink himself

that was fine as I think hes very

responsible ( under supervision) and needs to learn how to do things as hes becomming a young man .

It all went well and the sink unblocked .

But there was a coupple of little beads from the pack that did drop on the floor

I told him that things like this needs to be attended to right away and the floor has to be cleaned as well as surrounding benches

this was cleaned and checked straight away .

I have a two year old and dont want him to be picking up anything either with his hands or off his shoes etc,,

what i didnt think of is that the little beads that also cant get caught in your sleeves

.What happened

My two year old is not allowed in the kitchen without any body else there , even know things are locked up so he cant get into them its a place as a few others places in my home that hes not allowed to go into alone and the door has to be closed when no ones in any of those rooms so he can be kept an eye on at all times .

he was at the kitchen table with his older brother eating his dinner

my two year old came running into the lounge room crying and pointing to his mouth saying it hurts

i looked inside his mouth and even know i saw nothing and also questioned his older brother as to why he thinks he is crying all of a suddern. he had no idea and said he was happy chatting away eating etc,, and the next moment he got off the chair and ran to me crying

The light bulb in my head went on

I said to my older son it has to be the drano ,

we told him to drink water and he did cups of it while he was in tears while i was working out if it was the drano or not.

( THIS MAY BE HARDER TO DO IF YOUR CHILD IS ALOT YOUNGER OR TOO UPSET )

i went to the spot that he had been eating his dinner and right next to his plate there was one very small drano bead

how it got there at the other side of the kitchen I could only guess ,

the small bead must of got on my sons clothes and when he also went to sit down to eat it fell off onto the table

I have no idea as how it got into his food etc,, just a guess that as it rolled onto the kitchen table it must of also either got onto my two year olds sleeves and fell into his food or his spoon

it was just one ever soo small drano bead ..and there was just one other next to his food

we read the back of the drano box and did what it said to do incase TAKEN

drink lots of water do not induce vomiting and please go to the hospital if you feel that your child is either having a bad reaction or has had more that you think hes had , THERES IS ALSO A POISION CENTRE YOU CAN CALL ITS ALSO WRITTEN ON THE BACK OF THE BOX

I watched him very closely for a few hours and after about half an hour i did notice a red spot on his toungue ,HE ENDED UP SLEEPING WITH ME LASTNIGHT SO I COULD KEEP A VERY CLOSE EYE ON HIM

lucky it all turned out well and he didnt need to go to hospital or anything worse ,

THIS MORNING HE IS HIS HAPPY SELF,THERE IS THE EVDICENCE OF WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM ,, THE RED SPOT ON HIS TONGUE  AND ITS HUGE .i WILL BE TAKING HIM TO THE LOCAL DOCTOR JUST FOR A CHECK UP TODAY EVEN KNOW EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE FINE .

YOU JUST CANT BE TOO CAREFUL ENOUGH WITH YOUR CHILDREN

THIS WAS A VERY SMALL BEAD AND HE DIDNT JUST PICK IT UP TO EAT IT

IT GOTINTO HIS FOOD BY OTHER MEANS

ROLL ALL SLEEVES UP AND ONLY DO THIS OVER THE SINK.

AND REMEMBER YOU JUST CAN NEVER BE TOO CAREFUL XXX

other things to also watch out for on this link .

Re: Drano Hidden danger's you can never be too safe

its so true- you were very lucky.  I used to regularly care for a child (she was about 12 when i last saw her) who had an accident with cleaning chemicals as a toddler (caustic soda i think from memory) and it burned her throat so badly that she now lives with a tracheostomy, needs daily chest pysio, she cant eat, the chemicals literally melted her mouth and throat and has formula through a feeding tube, and has endless admissions to hospital.  This situation could have been so much worse, and i am glad he was ok in the end.

An alternative to using chemicals to unblock your sink. Have you tried a plunger? You can usually buy them at local supermarket or hardware cost under $10. It's just a big rubber suction cap with a handle and you place it over drain hole and plunge. It should push the blockage through the pipe. My ex is a plumber. Also use to unblock toilet though obviously would not use the same for both jobs.

Re: Drano Hidden danger's you can never be too safe

Glad you wee man is ok... its scary when you think you are so careful in dealing with chemicals...

my eldest daughter when we was 2 (shes 12 now) climed her kiddie gate on her bedroom,  pushed a chair from our dining room into the kitchen... climed up onto the bench, walked along the bench and over my cooker to get to a cupboard above my sink where i kept my dishwasher tablets, she ate one of them and then presented me the wrapper to show me what she had done as i walked out of the toilet.... we had to do a mad dash to the hospital where they made her drink this awful black stuff and then monitored her for a few hours... .scared the living daylights outta me though... I thought i had put them somewhere safe and outta her reach.

Re: Drano Hidden danger's you can never be too safe

pleased to hear your little one is OK. Kitchen nasties include Draino but at the top of the list is automatic dishwasher powder. Keeping it out of reach and in a locked cupboard is essential. But you remind us all that it is care in the use also. Thank you for sharing what must have been a very scary event.

Re: Drano Hidden danger's you can never be too safe

We are the parents and our job is to protect our young children at all times. But I hope that you do not feel guilty because of this incident. You did everything you could to make sure the area was clean. Freak accidents do happen to the best parents. The main thing is that your child is okay and we are reminded to be so careful.

NEVER use chemicals, I try to avoid them at all costs.  Bi-carb soda and vinegar are the best cleaning things that I have found, I even use vinegar in toilet as a squirty spray bottle for freshening the air after going to the toilet.  CK

Re: Drano Hidden danger's you can never be too safe

This is a great reminder.  Even for families who don't use chemicals we still need to teach our chldren to be careful - because other people DO use chemicals, and not all of them have the same locks on their cupboards that we may have.  I remember last year when my brother just died and I was kinda out of our home as much as possible there was a bottle of bleach on the kitchen table and the kids were sitting there eating lunch when we arrived.  It made me double take, and then really think about how people we like and/or trust do things differently.  It is not a bad thing that we are all different, just something to be aware of.

Peace

Re: Drano Hidden danger's you can never be too safe

Tunky said it. Soda and vinegar. Chemicals have no place in my home and never will. I hate reading things like this. Its so scary to be a parent sometimes. You always try to do the best no mater what. You would think that the govt. would look out for things like that. God forbid we rely on them for sound chem practices. It just makes me so angry sometimes. But I have learned alot about natural things. Anger aside just think about how that stuff goes into the treatment plants and into our oceans and then back in our bodies through fish.

Re: Drano Hidden danger's you can never be too safe

I don't use anything but baking soda and vinegar to unstop clogged drains just so that I don't have all those more dangerous chemicals in the house. The ones I do have are locked up in a cabinet away from tiny curious hands.

Very well written.  Glad to hear that your son is ok.  It could have been much worse.  You never know what to expect when working with chemicals.

Re: Drano Hidden danger's you can never be too safe

Glad to hear he's ok. There is another way to unblock drains, if anyone's interested. What we do, is we fill a kettle with water, boil it, then tip it down the drain. Then, put about a cup of bi carb soda down the drain, then flush white vinegar down on top of it. It will fizz and bubble and unblock your drain more safely.

how scary for you. I was going to buy some today as our drain is blocked. I think I will just get a plumber.

Thank-you for that.

Re: Drano Hidden danger's you can never be too safe
Hi
We don't use draino at all because of our evapotranspiration pit.
We use a product called ecocare activator that does the same thing as draino but is 100% safer
We buy it in a 10 litre container and use no where what near what they say to use.  We have no problems with blocked drains or anything
It is safe if the kids decided to drink it
You can even wash your benches and floors and everything with it.
Well worth the outlay
Luv Deb
