public vs private schools- for special needs children....

cazza by cazza Talking(July 2007) (rank 29th)

Its funny how we can be so diffrent on where we want our children to go to school...And how there are so many debates that private is better then public,.... What i find is that if you have a special needs child 9 times out of ten the following
happens..

Public schools:
Due to special education laws, public schools must educate all children, and provide the necessary programs to meet their special needs. This means that most public schools have special education programs and teachers who are trained to work with students who have particular needs.

Private schools: Private schools do not have to accept children with special needs, and many choose not to (although there are a small number of private schools specifically designed for special needs children). As a result, most private schools do not have special education programs or teachers trained to work with students with severe special needs. Private schools will try to help all the students they admit, but extra resources may also come at an additional cost.

Class Size
Public schools: Many states recognize the value of small classes and have provided funding to keep class sizes small in grades K-3. As students become older, class size tends to get bigger in public schools, especially in large school districts and urban schools.

Private schools: Private schools are generally committed to providing small classes and individual attention to students. Many parents choose private schools for this reason.

The Bottom Line
There are a few fundamental differences between public and private schools, but here's the bottom line: There are great private schools and there are great public schools. The trick is finding the school that best fits your child's needs. You may also want to consider public charter schools or homeschooling. It's a good idea to research the schools that interest you and, to get a true picture of the school, visit in person.

Good luck with choosing a school for your little one and hope they have the best education they deserve...

Hey cazza great article!!!!!! You are so right, the trick is finding the right school for your child. Gracie attends a public school. It's  a great one that has what they call the special eduction unit. The kids that attend the unit also have lessons with the other kids which I think is fantastic. I attended a private school which had one the best set up's for special needs kids that I have ever seen. The best part was it didn't cost the earth to send your kids there (of course that was back then). Again, great article

fi xoxo

P.S You read right, I went to a private school and guess what???? I'm no tramp georgie and neither were my friends. Think you'll find that both private and public schools have what you labelled as "tramps". I know my private school did and then so did the public schools that my other friends went to.

i cant believe u said that,. omg,...................

and my advise was more for parents not to judge each other and to look at diffrent schools..

My Alex is autistic and we have had nothing but 110% help and support with his school, we even have 6 other Autistic kids and 2 special needs teachers. its awesome.

i personally dont like private school's as my hubby is from a private school both primary and high and to be honest a year 5 can read and write better.

Re: public vs private schools- for special needs children....

 Great advice Cazza

Lachi goes to a public school, and they are the fantastic at what they do. They have a Special Needs Classroom situated in the school grounds, where the kids can get extra learning/help and also spend lunchtime there as well if they like.

This week, being Lachlan's birthday, they even made him a birthday cake to take to his class and share with his friends.

It's teachers and school's like this, that make them just that extra bit special I think.

Re: public vs private schools- for special needs children....

Great article Cazza, nice to see them compared this way. I personally have been to both private Catholic school & public school & couldn't really tell you the difference apart from the religion side of it. Actually, the girls at the private catholic schools were a lot nastier than the ones at public school too! lol! My boys will be attending our tiny local public school just down the road as any other schools are at least 45km away. The school is fantastic & we go to playgroup there twice a week now. When they are ready to go to high school I will be driving them 20km to the bus so they can go to a small country school too, I will not send them to the school in the nearest town (45km) even though it is only 2km to the bus as I see the kids wandering around the streets everytime I go to town & I don't want that for my boys! I understand that it is how you raise your children at home, but their schooling certainly has a big effect on how they grow up!

HI WELL

I JUST WENT TO AN OPEN DAY AT BOTH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE FOR NEXT YEAR AND BOTH SCHOOLS HAVE THE SAME CARICCULUM(HOPE THATS HOW YA SPELL IT)THE DIFFERENCE IS RELIGION AND MONEY PUBLIC $70/YEAR PRIVATE $1000/TERM AND WE HAVE 4 TERMS

STUPID AS I SAID IF THEY HAVE THE SAME CARICCULUM

I WENT TO A CATHOLIC SCHOOL AND I THINK MUM AND DAD WAISTED THERE MONEY  ALL MY FRIENDS THAT WERE IN THE PUBLIC EDUCATION WERE NICER THAN MY FRIENDS AT THE CATHOLIC SCHOOL THIS S$%^T ABOUT BETTER MANNERS I DONT THINK SO

SOMEONE SAID THEY WERE GOING TO LOOK AT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TEACHERS AND STUDENTS WELL THAT DOES NOT MATTER IF YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT FERREL STUDENTS WELL GUESS WHAT ALL SCHOOLS HAVE THEM AND AS FAR AS TEACHERES THEY ARE ALL THE SAME CATHOLIC TEACHERS HAVE AN EXTRA 6-12MTHS EXTRA OF COLLEGE AND THATS THE RELIGION SIDE

ANYWAY EVERYONE CAN DECIDE FOR THEMSELVES BUT PLEASE JUST CHECK THE CARRICULUMS THEY ARE ALL THE SAME

I think that is wrong, and the parents and teacher concerned needs to address this to the principal and the education department...

Thankyou bianca for your views...

Re: public vs private schools- for special needs children....

Gee $1000 a term!!!  Lachlan goes to Private and I only pay $100 a month for the 9 months that he is at school a year!

I wouldn't send my child to anywhere other then a private school..I went right through with a private education and want to be able to offer my son the same education that I had.  He needs discipline and the private school offers that along with more sporting opportunities then any other school here.  My son lives for his sport...hence that was another major factor!

At the end of the day it is a personal choice...you have to send you child to school where you feel comfortable . The quality of schools in Tasmania aren't fantastic and of the options I had to choose from here where I live were limited.  I wouldn't of dreamed of sending him anywhere else!

Luv ya bianca xx

Belle xx :)

Re: public vs private schools- for special needs children....
Thats it is a personal choice and im have to say what my children have being just offered is going to make other parents in launceston wanting their children to come to our school in 2 years time...

We have just being approved to have a brand new school and the cost is 3.4 million dollers and there hasnt being a public school built like that here in 20 years, and that was for a high schoo...

so of course im all excited as my kids education through the public eye is lookingh pretty good for then...

Re: public vs private schools- for special needs children....
People forget that Catholic schools are neither private nor public.  At public schools yes they do have a far better special education unit than most other schools.  I have only seen one Private school with its own Special Education Unit, and the parents have to pay for the use of it by not only paying the school fees, but also paying for the one on one care needed for their child.

That was what my article was about, and what i was trying to get across and alot understood was that it is best to look at both areas before judging each area..

Re: public vs private schools- for special needs children....
And yes you are so right about visiting the school in person.  I'm heading up to one today, I've seen others this week while I'm on holidays but there's no way I'd be booking her in to any school without having going in for a look and seeing the kids, the teachers, and having an interview with the principal.  Some schools are just not good for your child.

Re: public vs private schools- for special needs children....
I am a believer in Private Schools, i went to Catholic Private Schools all my life and my cousins went to Public Schools and i remember there was quite a difference.. especially in teaching of  Manners, and how to Behave, i think that is almost just as important. Maybe times have changed since then, my girls are still very little, but i will have to start looking at schools soon for Jasmine. Good Article,  there are so many different opinions on this topic and they are all good to hear.. Thanks for your thoughts. x

Re: public vs private schools- for special needs children....
great advice cazza.............when my two attended their first school, i send them to a private school......i split with my ex and couldn't afford the fees, so had to change them to a public school......my daughter came home one day saying how hard this new school was......when i asked her why, she said.....in the old school mum they used to teach us nothing but religion, in this new school we have to do a lot of hard work......may be i just send them to the wrong private school but it goes to show that not all private schools teach a better education.....i am not saying religion is wrong but at school they should be taught the things they need to learn and not to much of one thing.......my daughter and son had to struggle hard to catch up in the work they had missed.....after all this i was very happy that i had change schools, it was for the best......thanks for sharing this information.....regards Sandra xxx
