Hand me Not Downs!!!!!!

nell18-3 by nell18-3 Young Parent(July 2007) (rank 1st)
Firstly I need to point out this is a humorous article

Written as a dare by my brother!!!!! So PLEASE don't take this too seriously

With a possible valid point at the end?????

But mainly written to give you a little
giggle

But did you know that handing down clothes from one child to next

May be seriously detrimental to your childs mental development!!!!!

For years we have wondered at my younger brothers insecurities..........
Why did he hate having his picture taken?
Why did he not like going out?
Why did he always wear the same clothes for years!!!!!!!!!!

We discovered the answers to all these questions whilst pouring through my parents photo albums together on our trip down memory land of our childhood memories.
My parents used to dress my brothers in identical clothes!!!!
So what happened was as my baby brother grew out of his size, conveniently my middle brother would have outgrown his outfit so the clothes would be able to be recycled down to baby brother.
Judging by the photos this went on for many many years.!!!!!!!!

Oh the humiliation my baby  brother went through.
He would wear an outfit for a few seasons, if he hated the outfit he would feel such joy as he outgrew it
My parents would say to him "This is too small for you now!"
My brother would fill with hope
But then the bombshell.......
"What a good job we also have it in the next size up!!!!!!"

For years my little brother would be taunted in the playground for wearing the same tracksuit for so many years
On some occasions my Mum and her Sister must have shopped together
as my youngest brother finally outgrew what used to be my middle brothers clothes
My Aunty would come along saying
"Great news! As you like the outfit so much, I have it in the next size, your cousin has outgrown his!!!!!!!!"

No wonder my brother was a poor frustrated little chap with no self confidence (Yea right!!!!!!)
He was always wearing the same clothes
We have years of photos of him wearing the same outfits!!!!!!!
It even looks like the clothes got smaller and smaller then expanded, smaller and smaller then expanded

Note to all parents, when co ordinating your little darlings, be aware of the trauma your youngest will do learn to cope with, as they face years of wearing the same clothes over and over
Being afraid to leave the house because of teasing
Detesting all cameras after all who wants to be reminded of the fashion disasters that went on and on and on!!!!!!!!!!

I used to dress my boys identically too I'm afriad
I thought they looked cute
But even though they are brothers they are poles apart in personality,
perhaps I should have allowed them their individuality from the beginning
Who know what damage I have done to their poor little minds!!!!!!!!!!

Helen! Maybey you will regret introducing me to Minti !!!!!!!!!!! I have only just read this and wonder why you didn't read this out to me like you have many of your writings. You forgot to say that you all had new clothes for Easter and Christmas !!!!!!!! to think that all these pics will be out all over th house when Simon Sylvia and family are home again soon I am now puzzling my brain as to where I can hide them, The trouble is all my children know all my hiding places. The good thing about it we have had many laughs for many years over this and Simon have laughed abou it more than most.

Re: Hand me Not Downs!!!!!!

Hand me downs are great!!!  Nobody really notices, but I think the trick is not to tell the child...it's not lying just omitting the truth.  Children grow so quickly, but I do believe some new special clothes for special occasions is also very important.

Re: Hand me Not Downs!!!!!!
I never had the problem myself, being the oldest girl in the family. But my two older boys have been through this. It was funny. It was hilarious tho when I put the same clothes on the youngest one. We always had the hand-me-down from my cousins (they had 4 boys and no kids themselves) so the boys rarely got new clothes. Now the two older ones fit in the same size, so it is a free for all when it comes to their clothes. Loved the article brought back some fond memories. Leisa

Re: Hand me Not Downs!!!!!!
oh poor bugger hehe,,,,,,,,and yes i always worry about how the girls feel as chloe fits in some of caitlyns clothes and it looks funny at times....

I hated second hand clothes when i was growing up as i was often teased by the neighbouring kids, but now the stigma of it all is gone, and i have seen all walks of life walk into secondhand shops..

I have taught my kids never judge a book by its cover, as that person may look like they have lots of money, but below that surfuse you just dont know....

Re: Hand me Not Downs!!!!!!

Oh, I have tears of laughter running down my face, THANK YOU!

I too grew up on second hand clothes. Thankfully they were not co-ordinated with a sibling - my little brother would have looked odd, hehe! Now I am dressing my daughters in second hand clothes mostly - such a relief with a muck-magnet and a baby! But I shall try to avoid matching outfits as much as possible after reading this!
