tubal ligation

stacey79 by stacey79 Talking Back(July 2007) (rank 87th)

hi i had a tubal ligation don after my last child.

iam going to tell my expirence with it and put a little info in for you,Iam going to tell you what i have been told.

I had a tubal ligation after my last child as i am

factor 5 leiden, the only birth control i have been told i can go on is an IUD and as i didnt have the $180 to have it done i didnt.Instead i opted for a tubal ligation.as i was having a c-section they did it when i was having my child i took a extra 10 mins and didnt take any longer to heal than a normal c-section ,i got a little pain in the general area but that is it .

The doctor suggested i have it but as soon as i told him i was only 26 he had to think about it as they dont like to do it unless your over 30 he went through my medical records and decided it was the best thing to do.

These day they generally clamp them which is a  1 in 300  chance of getting pregnant again.i had mine cut tied burned and clamp.which the doctor said i still have a 1 in 3000 chance of getting pregnant but if i did it would be an act of god.

The procedure

There are a few way they do it if you are having a c-section they will do it there they may even opt for cutting and burning (as they did in my case) otherwise it is done via Laparoscopy in which case you will be put under a general anaesthic and clamp them ,less pain less ,healing time  the  next  is a Laparotomy this is done by a larger cut more ,healing time ,more pain ,and a longer stay in the hospital.

They cut and remove a pice of your fallpion tubes  or stitching the closed or burning the ends shut or  then clamping the tubes .alternatly a mixture can be done .

risks associated with a tubal ligation   reaction to the anaesthetic.

Damage to nearby structures, such as the bowel or ureters.

   Haemorrhage.

   Infection of the wound.

   Infection of a fallopian tube.

Pregnancy (the failure rate is around one in 300).

A risk of ectopic pregnancy in women who fall pregnant after tubal ligation.

i hope this is good advice it is a tough decision to make ,its not one that comes easy my advice is think about it long and hard and if it is the right desion for you good luck

thanks for reading .......stacey

Re: tubal ligation

I too have had a tubal ligation (some years ago now). It certainly was a hard decision but after successfully bringing  two beautiful girls into the world while dealing with uncontrollable Epilepsy, having anymore children was not only a risk to me, but to the child. For me it was a simple procedure(cut not tied) and i recovered quickly with just a little discomfort.

Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge.

Regards

Re: tubal ligation

my sister in law had a tubal litigation after her fourth child.  she was 22.  all four of her children were c-section, so she was told that her uterus and the scars from those c-sections, were not strong enough to support another pregnancy.  she was all for the proceedure, after being told all abt it.  however, the surgeon in charge was not going to do it because of her age.  we were all so angry abt that.  four kids and probable complications should another pregnancy occur and he was worried abt her age!!!  Luckily, a week befor th birth of my beautiful little niece, she was informed that th proceedure was to go ahead - cut, tied and burned.  she was thrilled - she may be young, but she made the decision with a clear head and whole heart.  that should be everyones right.

Re: tubal ligation
All that hassle and I still want mine done.  4 kids is enough for me and my partner.  All girls and we are not going to even think of trying for a boy!  Love what we have, though they drive us up the wall.

Re: tubal ligation

Great info.

Also beware the doctor that can't tell his fallopian tube from his ligaments!!!!!!!   My girlfriend had C section with number 3 and opted to have her tubes cut and tied at the same time the Dr obliged and told her not to do anything unprotected for about 9 months to ensure that she would not fall pregnant.   9 months came and went and then another 9 months and out came number 4!!!!!!  It appears that helpful Dr number 1 cut and tied some ligaments rather than her tubes.

Sufficed to say number 4 is a dream and she wouldn't have it any other way but what a shock it was when she found out she was pregnant again.

Thanks Stacey for your experience shared.

Re: tubal ligation
Hi there,

Thanks for sharing your story . . .  I too had this done and for the same reasons then 5 yrs later a another Dr retested my blood and discovered that I didn't have Factor 5 so my blood was retested another two times . . . I was so angry and my tubes were repaired at no cost to me . . . I have since gone on to have two more children and sadly I still get blood clots but no-one knows why . . .

Cheers Kellz

Re: tubal ligation
Thanks for sharing Stacey...i haven't researched it but what is factor 5 leiden?  Looks to me like you have a nice sized family and were able to make an informed decision about your own health and fertility.  I am glad the doctor agreed to do the procedure for you.  All the best.-Angela

Re: tubal ligation
factor 5 is a blood condition if you have it your blood clots more than others especially during pregnancy and in pregnancy the placenta has a higher risk of clotting thanks for the comment..........stacey
