easy toddler snacks - hummus!

sillyboho by sillyboho Speaking(July 2006) (rank 500+)
i'm a lazy cook and i'm always on the lookout for easy/yummy snacks. we snack alot in my house.

trader joes has whole wheat minipitas! pair that with their hummus sampler (4 types of hummus packaged togther) and you have a great family freindly lunch/snack/whatever. no slicing! (yes, i
AM that lazy)

the minipitas were also a hit with pb and jelly for lunch today.

if you're not familiar with hummus, it makes a great snack or meal. it is protein and carbs. you know kids <3 carbs. hummus goes great with veggies, bread, and crackers. stuff a pita with hummus and lettuce and veggies or just dip the bread in it.

making it at home is very easy, but lately i've just been buying it in large amounts.

here is a super simple recipe:
http://www.mediterrasian.com/delicious_recipes_hummus.htm

you can flavour it with anything, be creative! also, if you want to try it out but are leery of buying a huge jar of tahini use creamy peanut butter. the taste is slightly different, but still good.

Memories

OMG, I love hummus! Your comment reminded me of the first time we gave my daughter hummus. She loved it and I think it was too rich for her system and well, um, I won't go into details but let's just say she...how do I say it...blew. ; )

I just had to share that story. And as a side note, she eneded up trying it again later and still liked it and had no trouble digesting it.

Another nifty pita trick
We're fans of "pita pizzas" around here.  Spread tomato sauce, cheese, and whatever pizza toppings you like on the top of a pita, and warm it in the oven for a few minutes.  They make great kid-sized personal pizzas, and they can experiment with creative toppings!
