The Child In Us All

nell18-3 by nell18-3 Young Parent(July 2007) (rank 2nd)
I've just been to work leaving my sons in the capable hands of my daughter

Their older, wiser, grown up sister.........

What do I come back to find??????

They are searching for things to use as "sledges" to ride down the stairs!

Of course my first reaction was that of a parent

"What are you playing at........" rant rant rant

But then my inner child shone through and I realised.....

That looked fun

I do believe there is a child in us all
But I also believe we sometimes go to great lengths to keep that side of us hidden from every one else.

I went to a Garden Party this weekend
Lots of my wider family were there, it was my Aunts birthday after all so there were aunties, uncles and cousins galore, its was lovely
I spent time talking to my cousin who has also gone through a very similar separation and divorce as me
We were talking about how after being married for over 20 years each to men who had kept us in line!!!!!
We felt so young again, its like we have lost some of those 20 years and think we are once again in our 20's
My cousin told me that she went out clubbing with her daughter and her daughters friends one evening, she was having a fantastic time, dancing, singing, drinking, mixing, shouting....... all in all enjoying herself, She needed a bathroom break and whilst washing her hands she looked around and saw all these girls then caught her reflection in the mirror and had a shock!!!!!! Why wasn't the image looking back so different from how she was feeling, young, happy and relaxed. No the image looking back was happy and relaxed but hang on that wasn't a young face!!!!!!
We had a right giggle about it and both came to the conclusion that if our own children are happy with the new person we have become and enjoy being with us and are not embarrassed, then who cares!!!!!

Whilst looking for what to wear to this party I quickly texted my daughter and said I was considering buying some fashionable 3/4 length leggings with a dress/top or did she think I was too old???? Apparently yes I am too old
Instead I wore jeans with the dress/top. I was so pleased with the comments I got from my relations who hadn't seen me for a few months. Things like How Young I was looking!!!!!!

The lesson I learnt was this, I don't have to dress young and trendy to look younger
Usually that makes us look older and ridiculous anyway!!!!
All we have to do to look younger is this

Set free our inner child
Relax
Laugh
Enjoy Life
Be Happy
Think Positive
and Have Fun!!!!!

So next time you see someone having a laugh and enjoying themselves with their children, don't frown at them and think they are immature, like I used to do.
Instead
Be Happy for them
They have found the child in them and don't care who knows it

Re: The Child In Us All

LOL I enjoyed reading this. Your friend catching a glimpse in the mirror so reminds me of something very similar that happened to me at a club one night. I went through the second childhood 5 years ago when I first met my boyfriend.  Now when we go out we are surrounded with kids our own kids age. I often stop the fun too at home because of the mess and safety. The kids carry it on til someone is hurt but yes they do keep us young and I have to learn to stop and smell the roses sometimes and find the child within. Thanks for sharing that!

Thankyou

There is that fine line isn't there when we have to choose between joining in the fun, or stopping it before someone gets hurt LOL

Great advice Nell!    Sometimes I get so frustrated at the mess we live in, I lose it when the kids do creative stuff - it would be much more fun to join in and giggle along with them.  Like this morning, my son lined the spare mattress up against my bed and slid down it on his boogey board.  I yelled, then I looked and had a good smile - if it wasn't for this stupid sore foot I would have joined in.  Isn't that what makes life magical?  And I am sure it is that that keeps us young - or so my grandma swore!

Re: The Child In Us All

I haven't gone surfing down a staircase in years, or even sliding down a banister rail for that matter, but I've still got a strong desire in me to, when shopping with a friend (works best if it's a younger friend!) to skip along behind them crying out, "MUUUUMMY! Can I have a lollipop? Can I have an icecream? Ooo! Can I have THAT toy?" The last friend I did it to played along so well we kept it up for the whole time we were in the store; much to the amusement of all the other shoppers.

Re: The Child In Us All

I would have pulled out the toboggan, and launched it bigtime, oh wait do you think thats why my ex wont let me see the kids anymore??? naaaa i know why !!! the kids have a better time with me, and always will, I dont yell at them and I can talk to them on thier level.

If you would like to grab hold of your younger child, then let me know and I'll see what I can do to help, 38 dont mean dead

Ciao for now Ron aka Wildcatgta

I love my inner chlid emerging - however I do suffer some disapproval from other 'grown-ups'.  Their loss.  Thanks for sanctioning the fun we share.  At least I aint the only one...lol

Re: The Child In Us All
Would love to try going down those stairs but I'd probably end up in a wheel chair... BTW your not to OLD for leggins, it really depends on whether you suit them or not... I'm 50 & I wear them & I certainly don't feel I look like mutton either. In fact they suit me, but my daughter who is 20 years younger than me won't wear them because they make her feel as if she has extra skinny long legs!

Re: The Child In Us All
Hi
Im coming over to join you
I miss my cardboard slide.....don't miss the pain and bumps and grazes though
We took the kids to the park the other month and there was a roundabout with ponies on it...like the spring ponies you can buy kids and i jumped on while the kids spun the ride and i was singing Casey Chambers song...When I grow up I want a pony.....the kids were laughing and having a ball along with some other peoples kids that were on the ride.....looking around at the happy smiling faces i knew i had done the right thing no matter how ridiculous i looked and felt....a few of the parents standing watching had smiles on their faces and were laughing as well....one even said that looks like fun and i said it is hop on but she wouldn't for fear of being laughed at....
Yes i was being laughed at...but i was also being laughed with.......and my teenagers loved it...that made it all worthwhile

I quite often get from my more mature brothers and their wives,  when are you going to grow up, my answer... never isn't it fabulous!!!  Does that mean Im not responsible?? or a good mother?? no way I just live my life to the fullest, getting down to your kids level is the best thing you could ever do

Re: The Child In Us All
So are there any pics of you sliding down the stairs????     lol

When we were kids there used to be a huge playground in a town called Monash. This playground was famous in SA as if was so much fun. I remember pulling up in the car park one day and Dad was the first one out the car and onto the equipment. And he had been driving the car!

Great article Nell.
