how to amuse bubby while you attend to tasks

Anonymous Author (July 2007)

Most of you probably already have one of these but if you dont I thoroughly recommend them if your baby is at least 4 months old. Its a relatively inexpensive toy called a Jolly Jumper and has been around for around 50 years. We bought ours at Target for $40.

It takes no time at all to set up and is completely lightweight and fits most doorways. And it will take a toddler up to 15kg so you should get quite a lot of use out of it. You can hang it in a doorway and bubby can bounce away while you make beds or vacum the carpet. If you're hanging out laundry you can attach it to the clothes line or a nearby tree branch. In summer you can place a wading pool under it with a tiny bit of water so bubby can splash his feet while he bounces. There is a free standing frame available for it as well if you dont have suitable doorways but Im not sure how much they are.

Mr Mikey just loves being in his Jolly Jumper. He bounces around and giggles the whole time. Sometimes he just hangs there bobbing in a circle with a big grin on his face. Plus he gets some exercise at the same time as having fun bouncing and as a bonus he's usually tired out after 20 minutes and will easily go for a nap. Well worth the money I think.

Re: how to amuse bubby while you attend to tasks

Hi,

Thought I best add that there are pluses and negatives for this devise. I have used it and use it sparingly along with a baby walker. Btw I don't actually let him walk in it, I use it as a chair that has a table to attach all sorts of toys. Found it great to reduce reflux post meals.

Positive: promotes great leg strength. Helps to work off that additional energy.

Negative: it has been suggested that used regularly it can reduce babies desire to crawl. Instead encouraging babies desire to stand and walk.

Re: how to amuse bubby while you attend to tasks
To be honest, none of my children have ever had one, but now that my house is WAY too crowded for a baby walker, I have been thinking about getting a Jolly Jumper for number five after he/she is born!!!  In Big W, I noticed that you can also get a mat to put underneath the baby's feet  while they are in the Jolly Jumper and i assume it makes lots of fun noises...lol!!! I think it was under $30 for that also.

I tend to agree with the many of the other comments on here..I would find the baby way too exciting in the Jolly Jumper for me to even bother with my housework....

Great article

Amusing Who?
Yes we bought one too.  And yes it was great.  Though not much got done.  We were to busy watching our baby having fun!

Now that she is 4, and the others are too big for it, we are hoping to use it for our newest addition, and I will have to try the clothes line idea.Arna

Re: how to amuse bubby while you attend to tasks
My kids loved their jolly jumpers and so did I, my first born would often fall asleep in it, if we tried to take him out he would scream so he bounced himself to sleep.....  they are brilliant and if you can afford the frame that goes with it, brilliant for when you are outside hanging the clothes out etc...

Re: how to amuse bubby while you attend to tasks
My daughters have both loved bouncing in theirs. DD2 has even decided to swing in it lately - not sure whether to be worried, but the doorframe is holding up well! She jiggles backwards then runs forwards, weeee back & forth! Once she was in it she got strong legs pretty quick and immediately started bouncing on our laps ALL the time. One of my friends daughters though would not bounce in it, though she was happy to stand in it eating a biscuit! My only problem is not enough doorways in our fairly open plan downstairs, and she's not too keen on bouncing alone. Oh well, another thing to keep me away from the housework!!!

Re: how to amuse bubby while you attend to tasks
I wouldnt worry about the swinging if your doorframes are doing okay. My husband swings Mr Mikey in it sometimes and he just loves it.  We have a similar problem as far as open plan house goes. We only have 3 doorways he can use but Im hoping to find the frame to fix that problem.
