Twins…So, who was born first?

bittenbythelovebug by bittenbythelovebug Talking(July 2007) (rank 158th)

This question is one that twins or their parents get asked often. Everyone wants to know who the eldest is when it comes to twins. To me, this question has always made no sense. I mean, seriously…2 minutes doesn’t really make you older...does it?  If you meet another

person who has the same birthday as you, then you are the same age. So in my eyes it’s no different with twins.

In my quest for fairness, I decided not to tell my twins who was born first to avoid the whole “I’m older than you” situation, and I have to say, I think it has helped especially with school, because I just wouldn’t want one of them to forever be known as number two or  feel like they always came second.

Eventually they will find out who was born first, on their birth certificates it has elder of twins, and younger of twins. They have their suspicions but I guess it will be fun for them to find out when they are older. Why ruin the surprise?

Yeah, does 2 minutes make a difference?  In my case, the difference is only 1 minute.  On the birth announcement I mailed to everyone, I didn't even put the time of birth for the girls.

You know, I saw something on TV with identical quadruplets and the mother has associated personality traits based on birth order. I doubt even as much as 5 -10 minutes make a difference.

Makes sense when it comes to sibling rivalry to try to avoid as much as possible and this is certainly one area to be avoided.  Great suggetion.

Sibling Rivalry
good idea not telling them.  One sibling rivalry problem solved for now.

My brothers are twins and were born 15 min apart, they did do the old I'm older thing but more as a joke not serious and at 40 they still do it....  Funny though the eldest actually was the one that had less confidence and always hid behind his younger twin, as you say it really does not make a difference but to the twins it seems to make a difference lol

I hope my two make it a running joke too...they are very competitive though ... I just thought it would make them feel more equal (getting through school) as they are already compared on practically everything.

Growing up with twin brothers must have been lots of fun... T xx

Lots of fun yes but twice the annoyance and they still find it hilarious to annoy me, its funny at their age now they still get together and gang up on me!!! and oh they still get compared but they are the ones that do the most comparing!!!
