Convenience Foods

hermy by hermy Talking Back(July 2007) (rank 38th)

Convenience foods are defined as items that need little or no preparation, from ready to eat breakfast cereals, canned or frozen foods, to pre-packaged heat and serve meals.

Nutritionally, these products do not compare with home cooked meals. Most convenience foods contain a lot of sugar, salt and fat compared to home cooked meals.

Processing can strip vitamins and minerals from some foods, but there are a few exceptions. Fruit and vegetables that are quick frozen often have more vitamins than those picked before maturing shipped long distances and then allowed to sit on shelves at stores for way to long.

It is important to always check the labels and ingredient list. Sometimes combining convenience foods with fresh ingredients may help increase the nutritional value to your meals and also save time.

Convenience foods for our babies are good in nutritional value as they are prepared with certain standards especially made for babies, e.g.; Instant cereals, pureed fruit, vegetables and meat. As our children get older it can become a worry as the convenience foods are loaded with fat, salt and preservatives, e.g.; sausage rolls and party pies. Children individually packaged desserts are a big concern because they may provide milk but they are loaded with sugar, fats, artificial flavourings and colouring.

                      Be aware when feeding your children;

n      Chicken is a better choice than sausage rolls and party pies

n      Yogurts are better than most desserts

n      Porridge or wheat biscuits cereals are a better choice than sweetened children’s cereals

I have discovered that I can actually do my own convenience foods; all you need is a freezer and some planning.

n      Left overs can be pre-packaged so that you can just pop into the microwave on another day

n      If you are making soups or casseroles, make more than needed and freeze the portion that you don’t use

n      Buy extra fresh vegetables and freeze them

Doing this will help you to control the amount of fat, salt and other ingredients that you use, and you will have a ready made meal that will save you time when preparing your evening meal. Make sure you date and label all packages and always use oldest first.

                         I hope this helps………..

Re: Convenience Foods

I fully agree, I'm an avid label reader and started after the birth of my first daughter(now 16yo). I was determined to give her only food I had prepared myself, no lollies or chocolate etc and always checked the salt, sugar and fat content of everything I bought(which was when I discovered that weetbix actually contain sugar but vitabrits don't). The way I figured it was while she was young I would give her the best possible start I could and that as she grew older and wanted it, would allow the sweet treats and a bit of junk now and then. Her first taste of chocolate was compliments of one of my girlfriends at the age of 13 months and her justification for it was, but it's white chocolate! When she was still on mashed veggies I would prepare for those times when we may've been out and gotten home just on dinner time by freezing portions of her mashed veggies in an icecube tray, that way it's just pop a couple in a saucepan or microwave and voila, instant bubby dinner :D

Re: Convenience Foods

Hi all,

I found that being organised helped to avoid convenience food as far as packed lunches are concerned - for big and little people alike! I porbably spend 30 - 45 mins on Sunday afternoon/ night getting everyone's lunches ready for the week. Cut up fruit, carrot/ celery sticks, salads, sandwiches, biscuits, cold pasta (or leftovers) dried fruit etc all go into Tupperware containers, enough for everyone for the week.

This means that we still get that 'grab and go' convenience without the nutritional - or financial - burden. (You can by a 500g pack of biscuits for the same price as ten 25gram packs! - but I'm a bit of a cheap skate.

I freeze lots of dinners too - probably about 40 - 50 % of our dinners. Again, a bulk time investment means you still get the convenience of just popping something in the oven or microwave without the cost or the processing of store bought meals.

Thanks for another great article Sandra!

Re: Convenience Foods

Home cooked meals are the best! I bought Isabella MacDonalds for the first time about a month ago. She didn't even like it! Good! I'm not that keen on it either. So fine with me we won't get it again lol! We do get Pizza Hutt pizza about once a month when I want a break from cooking. Great article Sandra, having a healthy diet is very important. Thank-you. Kylie

Re: Convenience Foods
I make my own dough, although it does take more time, but it is better than shop brought base.  Takes about 20 - 40 minutes to prove but so worth it!  Jx

Yeah, Jaydee will make you a mean pizza with wholemeal pita base, sweet chilli sauce, sweet potato, sundried tomato, ham, spanish onion, mushies and feta cheese (you can have colby blocks since you are preggo and can't have soft cheese).

Re: Convenience Foods
I hear you - I get rather creeped out when I buy some so-called convenience products.  What is so convenient anyway?  Can they prove that the ingredients are what they say they are?  They never taste quite right, and they are always mushy and weird.  It doesn't take long to cook up a whole pile of veges, mash them up and freeze them in little containers for bubs to take out and about when they first start eating.

I can knock up a seafood Laksa, or Thai green curry, or the like in about 20mins from scratch & I hate cooking.  I make pies out of all our excess fruit, so it never goes to waste - though the pies go to MY waist.  Bananas, strawberries and yogurt are nicer than ice-cream anyway.  As for chips - it doesn't take long to knock up a quick snack of sweet potato or kumara chips (with some light sour cream and sweet chilli sauce on the side for Mumma's), and littlies love them.

Re: Convenience Foods
Great article hermy! Thankfully my kids enjoy the healthy food i provide them. We do however go out on fridays for " date night" where the kids get to choose what they want for dinner and funnily enough they never choose a fast food restraunt but prefer indian or japanese...etc T xx

Re: Convenience Foods
i love home cooked meals..... and i have just started to cook in bulk things like spaghetti bolognese and freeze it in servings enough for 2 people (emily doesnt eat much but is always enough for her hehehe) and have just recently started to blanch veges and freeze them in serves enough for the 3 of us.... as you say home style convenience is much better than the bought stuff (even though you have to buy it anyway haha)
Great advice sandra!
Cheers

Re: Convenience Foods
Excellent advice. I've rediscovered the slow cooker.  The veges are peeled (if needed) and diced the evening before.  They are then placed in the slow cooker and covered with water then put on low then when I come home, all that's needed is maybe some gravox or something to thicken and there you have it!  I buy those packs of containers from the supermarket with the clip-lock lids that are for fridge/freezer/microwave/pantry use and simply freeze that.  The slow cooker is used about 3 times a week, the days we're home I tend to cook the meals you need to stick around for.  If I don't get a chance to do anything, like yesterday and today (out car shopping!) it's easy enough to get a stew or something out of the freezer and add rice to it.  Takes 10 minutes to cook rice, we can have a shower in that time, so simple and nutritious.  Particularly as you aren't draining them either.  I agree with Cazza about the tinned food, I wouldn't eat that stuff so why make bub?

They are fantastic!  They lock in all the flavour and goodness and you leave it going all day without the risk of fires in the home.

Re: Convenience Foods
great advise sandra and i agree that homecooked meals are so much better, and even foods like macdonalds, and kfc, you can do at home and taste muchy better..

I still remember when my children were babies, and they would never eat many of the tin/jar foods, as i made most of mine at home, and the way i looked at it, if i didnt like it, bub wasnt going to either hehe..
